Physics: Advanced Higher<\/h1>\r\n

Entry Requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

An interest in exploring Physics at university level<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

An awareness and adherence to health and safety and risk assessments in Science<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The ability to follow instructions and work independently<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Learners should have achieved: Higher Mathematics, or SCQF level 6 units in Mathematics and Higher Physics SCQF level 6.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Course Content:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    \r\n
  • The course develops the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to analyse and solve problems in familiar and unfamiliar contexts. It offers opportunities for collaborative and independent learning set within familiar and unfamiliar contexts. It also seeks to illustrate and emphasise situations where the principles of physics are used and applied, thus promoting the candidates\u2019 awareness that physics involves interaction between theory and practice. The course allows candidates an opportunity to engage in some independent research. Candidates are encouraged to make critical and evaluative comments, and to accept that physics is a developing subject. The study of Advanced Higher Physics should also foster an interest in current developments in, and applications of, physics.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
  • Four mandatory units of study :<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
  • Rotational motion and Astrophysics<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
  • Quanta and Waves<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
  • Electromagnetism<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
  • Units, prefixes and uncertainties.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Assessment:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

      \r\n
    • Throughout Advanced Higher Science Courses, pupils are assessed throughout the year in the form of unit assessments, practical assessments and homework tasks. All sciences engage pupils through both theory and practical work.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
    • An extended project on a related area of the discrete science must be undertaken at Advanced Higher. This is then marked externally by the SQA.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
    • The final grade for the Advanced Higher course depends on both the final examination and the assignment grade combined.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
    • Final exam out of 155 marks sat over 3 hours – 70% of final grade<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
    • Project – investigating 3 or 4 experimental ideas – 30% of final grade<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
