Recommended Entry Requirements:
- N5 Media A/B/C*
(National 5 C* – Entry will be subject to consideration of personal circumstances, including a view of faculty staff, alternative progression routes and the individual’s learner journey)
- Higher English A/B/C or National 5 English A or B
NB: The course is most suited to the student who is already interested in and has some familiarity with media. The course requires a considerable amount of written work of an analytical nature and the student must be capable of conceptual thinking in order to benefit.
Course Content:
Pupils will acquire an understanding of:
- Representation -stereotypes, non-stereotypes, selection, portrayal
- Narrative theory
- Language – technical/cultural codes
- Institution – internal/external factors
- Society
- Audience theory
- Categories – genre, tone
- Role of the media
Pupils will be able to:
- Decode media codes
- Describe media codes
- Analyse media codes
- Comment on media codes
- Create a media artefact
Assessment:
- Summative – 50% exam, 50% assignment
