{"id":4,"date":"2020-05-21T13:39:56","date_gmt":"2020-05-21T13:39:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/an\/anguseducationalpsychology\/?page_id=4"},"modified":"2025-11-19T11:36:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T11:36:09","slug":"about-angus-eps","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/an\/anguseducationalpsychology\/about-angus-eps\/","title":{"rendered":"About Angus EPS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Educational psychologists (EPs) in Scotland aim to improve the life chances of all children and young people.\u00a0 As part of the Education and Lifelong Learning Directorate within Angus Council, we work closely with educational establishments and in partnership with families and other services to address inequalities and enhance the inclusion of children and young people.\u00a0 Every primary and secondary school in Angus has a<a href=\"https:\/\/glowscotland.sharepoint.com\/:w:\/s\/EPSPracticeTeam\/EULdg5ERiPJHn0C9iJILT6IBhQ5vESk8DukqVG8t28m12Q?e=o3dYew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> named educational psychologist<\/a>.\u00a0 You can read more about our <a href=\"https:\/\/glowscotland.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/s\/EPSPracticeTeam\/EaUyh_gvlZBGo9yAwBePelABAs3vyBOCyncWjXJ7Zzh3mQ?e=l0XrDB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deployment model here.<\/a>\u00a0 EPs can also provide support within early learning and childcare settings (ELCCs).\u00a0 We follow and adhere to the professional standards and code of conduct of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we do<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our vision is to &#8220;Use psychology to improve the wellbeing and educational outcomes of all children and young people in Angus\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>We aim to achieve this by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Developing respectful and supportive relationships<\/li>\n<li>Influencing learning and teaching through robust and relevant research and development<\/li>\n<li>Identifying and sharing understanding of additional support needs within the Angus Continuum of Need<\/li>\n<li>Helping those who work with children to find solutions through creative and evidence-based practice<\/li>\n<li>Developing and delivering quality and impactful training to key adults in the lives of children<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Consultation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Angus EPS has a <a href=\"https:\/\/glowscotland.sharepoint.com\/:w:\/s\/EPSPracticeTeam\/EYVPgKa0Ik1PrRe-8qgeHWUBQX741-8xez_uKCrXcH_RyA?e=FPQ4Jm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consultation<\/a> model of service delivery, which means we do not accept referrals or hold waiting lists, but instead negotiate our involvement with our schools.\u00a0 We carry out consultation with education staff to support a wide range of needs and work alongside families and young people to understand difficulties and find solutions to problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Assessment and Intervention<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A key part of our role is to contribute to the assessment, planning and review process.\u00a0 This is done in collaboration with parents, schools, and other agencies, if relevant.\u00a0 In Angus this is called the <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/134JMCQUR8o3cWj0mUPfehhIAL8TXZ_ZX\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Continuum of Need<\/a>.\u00a0 We use our knowledge of psychology and child development to support identification and understanding of the needs and strengths of children and young people. \u00a0Often it is not necessary for us to work with a child directly: we recognise the contribution and expertise of the key adults in children\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n<p>It is important for us as a profession to be as least intrusive as possible in the lives of children while remaining effective.\u00a0 Therefore, our contribution to the assessment process may involve gathering information from staff, reviewing a child\u2019s work or school-based assessments, speaking to parents, or asking for the child\u2019s view to be gathered by others.\u00a0 Where it is agreed it will be helpful for us to assess a child\u2019s needs more directly, we may do this through observation, activities with the child, questionnaires and other recognised assessment materials as appropriate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Working with others<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will always seek consent for our involvement and are required to follow data protection (GDPR) .\u00a0 The school will request that the parent or carer signs our privacy notice and\/or that the young person signs the form if they are over 12.
