Symmetry
We have been learning about symmetry in maths this week.
We have been learning about line or reflective symmetry. Line symmetry means a reflection. If we were to draw a line through a shape to represent a mirror, the shape could be folded on that line and both sides would fit together exactly together.
After looking at lots of examples on the interactive whiteboard and playing some games on Education City, we sorted these pictures in our maths books.
This afternoon we had the choice of two activities when using the computer. One choice was to draw a horizontal or vertical symmetrical picture using Pixie.
The second choice was the most popular! We created snowflakes using this website. Try it for yourself. Did you know that real snowflakes are always symmetrical and have their own amazing patterns?
Here are some we made.
We also found this site to make a cut paper snowflake online. Have fun making your own symmetrical snowflakes.
Cat Mummies
Did you know that the Ancient Egyptians didn’t just mummify Pharohs and other important people. They also mummified their cats!
Nearly all ancient Egyptian homes had a cat. But cats were not pets.
The Ancient Egyptians believed that cats had magical powers. They believed cats protected their homes and children from danger. They kept a cat for protection.
Cats did keep down the rat population and they did chase away snakes but cats were much more important to the ancient Egyptians than that.
The Egyptians mummmified their cats so the cats could help protect them in the afterlife.
You were in big trouble if you hurt a cat in ancient Egypt. Your punishment could be death.
Mrs Stewart told us that she saw some real mummified cats when she visited the Egyptian Exhibitions at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh last year.
We have been making our own cat mummies. First, we made a cat shape from newpaper and masking tape. Then we wrapped our cat in bandages made from wet kitchen roll. They are just drying out now. Some of us want to paint them and some of us just want to leave them as they are. We are still deciding…
Road Safety Poster Winner
A wee while ago, the Junior Road Safety Officers at our school ran a competition. Everyone in the school had to design a poster to encourage children to cross the road safely.
Today, at assembly, we had a lovely surprise when we found out that one of our Superstars had designed one of the winning posters!
All the posters will be displayed in and around the school. Super work, Superstar.

Ancient Egypt
Here are some pictures of the work we have been doing over the past few weeks for our topic.
We painted these lovely silhouettes of pyramids at sunset.
Our friends in Primary 3 at Dunipace Primary School are also doing a topic on Ancient Egypt. Click here to see their super work on this art project.
We made amulets by pasting pasta shapes onto card, then spraying them gold or silver.
We made pendants from clay and carved our initial/s on them in hieroglyphics. We are waiting for these to dry before we spray them gold and add a ribbon.
We have been learning about Egyptian houses and made this Egyptian courtyard from one of Mrs Stewart’s project books.
Keep checking back ty see what else we do!

Non-fiction Skills
We have been using our topic of Ancient Egypt to look at the features of non-fiction books.
We have been learning to use a dictionary to look up some of our topic words. We have learned that a dictionary has two purposes – to help us spell words correctly and also to help us find out what the word means.
We have found out that most of our topic books have something called a glossary at the back. Like dictionaries, we have found out that these are arranged in alphabetical order. A glossary is much shorter and gives us the meaning of some of the words in a book which we might not know.
We worked with partners to choose words from a topic book which we did not know the meaning of. We wrote the meaning of these, from the glossary, and then shared them with another pair of children in our class.
We are learning lots of new vocabulary.
