Brexit – Word of the Year 2016

This week Collins released their top 10 words of 2016 and the winner was Brexit which has dominated Europe and the UK this year, after the EU Referendum between Bremain (which was according to the polls going to win comfortably) or Brexit. Since then the western world has been thrown into a whirlwind of political unrest.

In Second Place was: Hygge which has been a Danish word for a long time but has never had an English translation, so rather than create a word they just made Hygge an English word also, it essentially means to create a cosy and lovely atmosphere and a feeling beneficial to your Health & Well-being.

Third Place went to: Mic Drop this although being two words has been amalgamated and now denotes when someone literally or gestures dropping a microphone after giving a speech, this was popularised by President Obama who literally dropped the mic after one of his final speeches.

Fourth was: Trumpism, yet another political word based on the other huge political decision in the western world this year where two very unpopular candidates (Democrat Hilary Clinton / Republican Donald Trump) will be receiving the keys to the Whitehouse from Obama, that’ll be his final mic drop.

Collins chose throw shade in fifth which is to make a public show of contempt for someone or something in a subtle or non-verbal manner, basically to snub someone.

Sixth place went to: Sharenting which is a word I think will catch on much like selfie and both words are similar, sharenting means to habitually use social media to share news and pictures of their children.

The seventh word was: Snowflake Generation. This word will follow it’s generational ancestors of Millennials who were born at the turn of the 21st Century and Generation X the generation beforehand. The Snowflake Generation of the 2010s are apparently more prone to being less resilient and to take offensive easily, not a great advertisement for those people.

In eighth place we have: Dude Food which is junk food that for whatever reason appeals to men more. Such dude foods include burgers and hot-dogs, however many women (non-dudes) like these foods also, sadly it doesn’t help the obesity problem the west faces.

Ninth place was: Uberization this word will likely become business jargon soon. Uberization is when a business adopts a model where services are offered on demand through direct contact between customer and supplier through mobile technology.

The last new word of 2016 to sneak onto the list was: JOMO which isn’t technically a word but an abbreviation much like YOLO (You Only Live Once) BRB (Be Right Back) and WTF (What the… you get the picture anyway) JOMO is an abbreviation for Joy Of Missing Out which essentially enjoying yourself without caring that other people may be having more fun, also known as being content!

So that concludes the top 10 words of 2016, let us know what your favourite is in the comments.
