The Savage – Kev’s Corner

The Savage is a surreal “Quick Read” by David Almond that has a graphic novel embedded in it.

The Storyline

The book is set in Burgess Woods and is about Blue Baker who starts to write a story about a savage who lives in the nearby woods but, the story becomes more and more real. Spoooooky!!!

Opinions

It was a very surprising story and the mix between regular story and Blue’s story and the graphic aspect of it all leads to a very interesting story. The illustrations by Dave McKean are quite abstract but certainly add to this weird and chilling story.

Best Bit

The best bit is also one of the most unnerving parts of the story. Blue writes another chapter of his book when The Savage sees Blue’s sister and leaves a grubby mark on her forehead. The next morning Blue’s sister wakes up with a muddy forehead. Spoooooky!!!

If you are interested in this story and other works by David Almond, the library has a good selection, also it’s worth looking out for Dave McKean the illustrator if you are interested in his artwork as he has worked with other authors such as Neil Gaiman in his “Sandman” series.

Kev Says

Quite an unsettling read but incredibly creative: 5 out of 7 on the Kev-o-meter.
