Dicey Moments

In Problem Solving today we were using the strategies ‘act it out’ and ‘trial and error’ to solve our mathematical problem.

We had to arrange our dice tower in a certain way so that all the sides had the same total.

Our extension of this was to arrange the dots on our four dice tower so that opposite side had three times as many dots.

SHMU FM

Adele from SHMU FM visited P7B on the first day back of Term 3. She is going to be working with us for the next 6 weeks on our very own radio broadcast. We are very excited to be part of the ‘Speak Out’ programme.  We will confirm the details of our live broadcast on SHMU FM closer to the time.

Term 3

2018-19

Welcome back to Primary 7B, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas   holiday and are ready to embrace Term 3 with the same attitude that proved successful in Term 1 and 2.  Our topic this term will be WW2.

This term in Numeracy and Mathematics we are going to be looking at ‘Number and Number Processes’ as well as ‘Estimation and Rounding’.  Throughout this we will be learning to further our awareness of number, place value, order of operations, negative numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages and applying these areas across different contexts.

This term in Language and Literacy we will start a new class novel called Narnia- The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.   In addition to this, reading will be heard weekly in a group and also individually through ‘ Fluency Tutor’ which is linked to our Google Classrooms.  For spelling we will be learning spelling rules. Each week we will learn a new spelling rule and investigate/learn words which are linked to this rule.  In grammar we are going to be developing our skills at a word, sentence and text level. Reading groups will be heard throughout the week with reading homework given after the group have been heard.

Miss Leitch, from Hazlehead Academy, will be taking the class on a Tuesday afternoon for Science .

In RME this term we will be learning about Judaism and making links with our topic this term which is WW2.

Physical Education will be taught twice a week by Mrs Boyd on a Tuesday and Mr Friel, the PE Specialist, in a new slot on a Friday.  Please ensure that you have a change of clothes/ shoes and all jewellery is removed prior to the lesson in accordance with Aberdeen City Council Policy.

In Digital Technologies this term we will be exploring ‘Computing Science’ starting with understanding the world through computational thinking which will lead to understanding and analysing computing technology followed by designing, building and testing computing solutions.

Mrs Boyd

Science

In Science today we were measuring the speed at which we could turn fans using wind. We were changing the distance of the wind from the fan to measure the change in the speed the fans turned. We will use this knowledge to better understand the construction and functionality of wind turbines.

Library Launch

Today was a very special day in Fernielea, we launched our new library!

P7B got a chance to visit and we’re delighted to receive some beautiful new books which were gifted to us from ‘The Book Trust Scotland’.

We are really looking forward to visiting our new library weekly.

Ready, Steady, Cook!

This week in the kitchen some members of P7B were learning to make spaghetti in a tomato sauce.

We are really starting to see an improvement in our chopping skills and also  in our general organisational skills.

We all enjoyed making it and think it is something we could easily make at home.

Red Nursery P.E Lesson

Primary 7B have been working with the Red Nursery this year as they are our partner class.

P7B though it would be a good idea to plan and implement a P.E lesson for the Red Nursery.

We looked up the early level experiences and outcomes to make sure we followed the curriculum and made sure the small activities had an element of either literacy or numeracy to them.

The boys and girls from the Red Nursery were extremely well behaved and we cannot wait to spend more time with them in the coming months.

Study Skills

P7B have started to learn some fun study skills for one of our Big Maths focuses this week ( doubles and halves). We made a set of cards  that featured the doubles and halves and thought of fun games we could play to memorise them.  We played snap, pairs and an adapted version of ‘Go Fish’ and ‘Scabby Queen’. We also discussed how we could adapt this study skill into different contexts.

Solar Ovens

Every Tuesday Miss Leitch from Hazlehead Academy visits P7B to take our science lessons. This term we are learning about renewable energy.  This week we made solar ovens because we learned that you can cook food from the heat of the sun in them. In our solar ovens we have placed water in a pot and are monitoring the temperature of the water throughout the week to measure  it heating up.
