Term 3 newsletter

Dear Parents                                                 P6P Newsletter – January 2018

Welcome back after the holidays. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas break.

This term, Mrs Rhodie and Mrs Valentine will be supporting the children in class and Mrs Duthie will continue to take the class on a Tuesday.

Our class topic this term will be the Victorians. We will be looking at the Victorian era in detail; learning about transport, home life, children, school, inventions and artists. We will be going on a trip to Tarves Heritage Centre where they will experience a Victorian style classroom. The children will take part in role play activities where they will act as if they were children in the Victorian times. This is an exciting opportunity for the children.

We will be reading ‘Dark Isle’ by D, A Nelson as our class novel. I hope they will enjoy the novel as much as I do! For reading and spelling, the children will continue to follow the Active Literacy Programme alongside the Reflective Reading strategies which will improve their skills in understanding of a text. Furthermore, they will continue to follow the Big Write Programme which allows children to focus on up levelling writing by using vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation.

In maths, we will be focussing on money and time. We will continue working on money, learning how to calculate APR, work with statements and calculating bills. Then, we will work with 24 hour time and learn how to read timetables.

The children will continue to follow the “Big Maths” programme which improves their mental calculations. All children, each week, take part in CLIC challenges and Total Recall Challenges to improve their personal scores.

Some other useful information which you may find helpful at the beginning of the new term:

  • Homework: Maths and spelling homework will be given out every Monday and should be handed in on Thursday. Please could you ensure you sign each page of your child’s work. If there are any questions regarding their homework, please feel free to leave a comment in their jotter.
  • Reading: Reading homework will be given out and heard on a Thursday, along with a reading task for the Orange and Blue group. This will be completed in a jotter. The Green and Red group will have reading on a Tuesday, Thursday and Monday. Please ensure you sign your child’s reading record.
  • Our timetable: We have gym on a Tuesday and Friday. Please make sure your child has their gym kits for those days.

As always, please contact me if you have any issues.

Term 2 newsletter

Dear Parents, P6P newsletter – November 2017

Welcome back after the October holidays. I hope everyone had a relaxing break! It was lovely to meet you at parents evening – thank you for taking the time to meet with me to discuss your child’s learning.
Term 1 passed very quickly and we all enjoyed learning about Japan. We will be continuing to read the rest of our book from last term, “Kensuke’s Kingdom.”
This term, our topic is Christmas and Enterprise. The children will be learning about profit, loss, stock and budgeting, alongside making a craft to sell at the Christmas fair. They will be working out what supplies we need, how much it will cost and how much we need to sell the items for. After the fair, we will work out if we have made a profit or a loss! Let’s hope for a good profit!!
In maths this term, the children will continue to work on decimals, percentages and fractions and move onto money which will tie in with our topic. They will also continue to follow the “Big Maths” programme to improve their mental calculations where they take part in a weekly CLIC challenge and Total Recall Challenge to improve their personal scores.
In reading and spelling, the children follow the Active Literacy Programme alongside the Reflective Reading strategies which will improve their skills in understanding of a text. Furthermore, they will continue to follow the Big Write Programme which allows children to focus on up levelling writing by using vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation. We will visit the school library twice a month so that the children have an opportunity to take books home or leave in class for ERIC time (Enjoy Reading in Class).
Just a reminder of any other information you may find useful:
• Our timetable: We have gym on a Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure that your child has their gym kits for those days. There is space available in the class for children to leave their kits for the week.

• Reading: Reading homework will be given out and heard on a Thursday, along with a reading task for the Orange and Blue groups. The Green and Red groups will have reading on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure to sign your child’s reading record.

• Homework: Maths and spelling homework will be given out every Monday and should be handed in on Thursday. Maths homework is a consolidation of what your child has been learning in class and should never be anything new. If there is an issue with homework, please ensure your child speaks with me before Thursday to ensure it is handed in on time. Please leave me a comment in their jotter if you have any questions regarding the homework.
As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any queries.
