Primary Six Term One.

This term Primary Six have settled in well to their new classroom.

We have been working hard on our reading strategies through the novel Glubbslyme and next term we will continue to develop these skills in our reading groups. We have also been working on our spelling strategies both at home and school.

In maths we have been concentrating on our times tables using many different resources. We all love a game of hit the button to speed up our response time! The squares have been working on place value through decimal place to two places – some of us have found this very tricky but we are making steady progress. The circles have been working on addition and subtraction with hundreds, tens and units – we are also making progress.

Our topic this term has been Aberdeen and the Oil Industry. All of us have enjoyed learning where oil comes from, what we use it for and the impact it has on Aberdeen. We had to research about Red Adair and prepare a talk to present to our class mates. This was completed to a very high standard – so much so that I have attached a video to this blog for everyone to enjoy!

We also created posters to advertise why it is so great to live and work in our beloved Aberdeen. Following this lesson we worked in groups to create an advert to draw people to live and work in Aberdeen. Again this film is attached to the blog for all to enjoy!

Sadly I could not attach more than two films!

I look forward to Term Two where we will be studying The Victorians!

Miss McVicar.

Hello

Hello

Welcome back for another term.

Language

This term we will be continuing to learn our initial sounds. We will also be working hard at blending these sounds to help us to develop our reading and writing skills. Please do not forget to sign and traffic light the reading and phonics homework in our  school homework diaries.

Maths

In maths we will be building on our number sequencing and counting to 20.  We will also be working on addition and subtraction within 10. .The finial maths topics we will cover this term is 2D and 3D shape and time using o’clock.

Topic

At the start of term we will spend a few weeks learning all about Scotland in connection to Burn’s Day. We will tie this in with a short look at Chinese new year to see the similarities and differences of cultures around the world.

This term our main topic is “Under the sea”. We will look at all the different plants and animals that live under the sea as well as the different habitats that they prefer.  We will research our favourite animals and prepare a small talk as well as attempting to build our own ship wreck and small boats!

At the end of this term we will be learning about Easter.

This is looking to be a busy term so here are a few reminders:

• Reading three times a week – usually Monday, Thursday and Friday.
• Phonics homework once a week – usually given on a Monday to be completed by Thursday.
• Library visit on Tuesdays
• Gym on Wednesdays.
