Primary 1

Literacy

We will be continuing to learn single sounds by following the Jolly phonics programmer. Please continue to help your child at home by listening to their reading and helping them to practice their common words.

Numeracy

The children have been learning to recognise, write and order numbers to 10 and will soon be ready to start adding to numbers together. We will be introducing Big maths “Learn its” which we will be sending home to practice.

HWB

We have been discussing the importance of looking after your teeth and washing your hands. In PE we are continuing to improve our ball skills and have been having fun working co-operatively.

IDL

This term our topic is toys. We will be learning about toys from the past and investigating how toys work. Our role play area will be a toy shop. Your child will be asked to bring in a favourite toy to show the class and to talk about.

Other

Our gym days are Thursday and Friday. Please make sure your child has shorts and gym shoes on these days. Usually reading days are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, however, this can change so please send your child to school with their blue folder every day.

March 2014

In the Rocket Room we have had another busy term.  We have been retelling some Traditional Scottish Stories and Poems.  We really enjoyed hearing Tam O Shanter by Robert Burns, then we retold the story in our own words. We also drew illustrations to go with the story.

During maths time we have been working with 2d and 3d shapes.  We are able to talk about the properties of all the shapes.  We made 3d shapes using nets.  We went for a walk round the local area to see if we could find the shapes outside.

We learned about Chinese New Year and how it is celebrated.  We made dragon puppets and colourful lanterns.  They really brighten up the room!

On Tuesday the 4th March it was Shrove Tuesday and we had great fun making pancakes.  We all took turns to measure the ingredients and mix up the batter.  The best bit eas eating the warm pancakes – delicious!

This Term we have been very lucky to have Abby from Drake Music coming on Friday afternoons.  We have been learning how to play metallophone and zylophone instruments.  We are getting better every week and can play ‘Marie’s Wedding’.  We hope to do a little performance at the end of term.

What a busy term!

We have had a very busy term since we returned to school in August. All the children in the Rocket Room have been working especially hard. We all visited the Cooking Bus and enjoyed making Twice Baked Potatoes and Salad. We also learned how to use a knife properly.

We have been doing some great pieces of writing. We listened to Aesop’s Fables and retold them in our own words.

We have been learning to use adjectives to describe people and have created some fantastic ‘Wanted’ posters!

Summer Term

We have enjoyed a very busy term.  This week we went to Kid’s Out which is an annual fun day organised by the Rotary Club.  We had fun riding on ponies, getting our faces painted and watching a magician.  We were lucky to have a dry day and were able to enjoy an outdoor disco at the end of  the afternoon.

News from the Rocket Room.

Happy New Year 2013!

We are looking forward to a busy new term in the rocket room.

Mathematics

We will be working on adding and subtracting at the beginning of the term.  Some of us will be adding and subtracting large numbers.  Later in the term we will be working on ‘telling the time’ , looking at analogue and digital clocks.  We will also be doing some work with angles, so hopefully the snow will clear up and we will get to do some of our learning out of doors.

Literacy

We are going to be finding out about all things Scottish in January as part of a whole school topic.  We will be listening to traditional scottish stories and retelling them in our own words.  One of the stories we will be listening to is “The Selkie” which is a magical story all about seals.
