Sparklers and Woodies Wednesday

On Monday we joined up with the Butterflies to watch Mrs Walker light some sparklers in the Wildlife garden. We talked about how to keep ourselves safe near the sparklers.

It it was a very wet morning on Wednesday, however the children had a wonderful time exploring the Woodies in the rain. We took our nursery umbrellas and it was interesting to watch the children work out how to share four umbrellas between eighteen children. Lots of negotiating and sharing of resources. The children were developing their creative and vocabulary skills when they went on a bear hunt in the rain with Mrs Walker. Instead of, “What a beautiful day!” we said, “What a wet day!”

We enjoyed experiencing the rain falling on our tongues, faces and arms.

With the weather turning colder and wetter we would like to remind parents to ensure that their child comes to nursery each day with suitable outdoor clothing. We try to get outside as much as possible so please make sure your child is suitably dressed for the weather conditions that day. Thank you to all our volunteers who help each Wednesday, without your participation we could not go to the Woodies. Please support this valuable outdoor learning experience for your children by signing up to help.

On Friday we were learning about why people wear poppies at this time of year. We watched a short film about the work of ‘Poppy Scotland’ and this encouraged the children to ask questions about helping others in our community. We painted a field of poppies and some of the children painted their own poppy. At 11 o’clock we joined in with the rest of the school and tried to stay silent and we very nearly achieved it!!

Autumn is fun

Autumn is here and we had so much fun at the Woodies on Wednesday. Lots of rolling and burying ourselves in leaves. Our challenge was to find five different shapes of leaves.

Thanks to all for completing our holiday challenge to find lots of Autumn things to fill your bag. There was a lot of discussion in small groups as we enjoyed sharing the contents of our bags with our friends.

Friday is library time

We have now got our library sessions up and running and the children are enjoying exchanging their books. Each week our volunteers do a fabulous job of being librarians and they help the others to return and then issue a new book. This week our librarians were Lucas, Joey and Anna.

Have a wonderful autumn break and don’t forget to fill your bag with Autumn materials!

Visit to Mrs Youles’ allotment.

On Thursday we went to visit Mrs Youles at her allotment. The children went on a fruit and vegetable hunt and then harvested some of the vegetables which we had planted before the summer. Here is what the children said about our visit:

John said, “We put the potatoes in the yellow tub. I liked picking the beans.”

Bailey said,”I liked digging the potatoes.”

Forbes said, “I liked picking the raspberries.”

Lucas said,”I liked putting the potatoes in the bucket.”

Chloe said,” I liked picking the pea pods.”

Ruby said, “I was holding Ziggy and I liked digging the potatoes.”

Lucy said, “I was looking for potatoes, raspberries and peas.”

Sebastian said, “I was looking for apples.”

Lily said, “I was trying to get some raspberries.”

We are now going to decide what we would like to plant in our nursery garden for spring. Very many thanks to Mrs Youles and all our parents who helped to make our visit a brilliant learning experience!

Welcome to our ladybirds blog

Welcome to our first post. We are always keen to share what the children are learning in nursery. This week was our first outdoor learning trip to the Woodies. The children had a wonderful time gathering natural materials to use to build bird’s nests back in nursery on Thursday. We were also learning about keeping safe walking to and from the Woodies. The Woodies is a fantastic resource and the children learn so much from playing and exploring. Ziggy was very impressed with the way the children followed the rules about keeping safe at the Woodies. We go to the Woodies every Wednesday whatever the weather, unless we assess there is a risk for the children so please remember to dress your child appropriately.

We are looking for adults to help with our visit to Mrs Youle’s allotment on Thursday morning. If you can help let us know. Thank you.
