Police Officer Visit

We had a visit from our Community Police Officer.  He showed us a video and told us about the various tasks a Police officer does.  He also let us try on his hat.  It was great fun.

Ranger Visit

We had a walk to the Burnie with two rangers from Aberdeen City Council.  We did a mini-beast hunt and had the opportunity to try some pond dipping with a net.

Ourselves -Red ELC

In the Red ELC, we have been looking at ourselves and our individual characteristics.  We looked in the mirror and either drew a picture of what we saw or painted a self portrait.  We also looked at our eye colours and created a graph to show the differing eye colours.

Emergency Services in the Green ELC

While we were learning about keeping safe around medication, the children in the Green ELC showed an interest in learning about the emergency services.  We learned that we call ‘999’ in an emergency. We created some lovely firefighter pictures and displayed them on the wall.

Comments from the children – The fire engine puts out the fire.”   “They help us turn off the fire”.   “Policeman helps if you get lost”.

Substance Misuse

As a school we have been learning about substance misuse.  In the ELC we decided to learn about safety around medication and household cleaning products.  We learned how to identify warning symbols on the  back of products through a variety of activities including matching and sorting games and craft activities.

Minibeasts

The children have shown an interest in insects and therefore we have chosen this as our current topic.  We have watched some videos, created some insects through craft activities and have had a lot of fun digging outside.  We will be counting legs, finding out about their habitats and what they eat over the next couple of weeks.

Chinese New Year

This week we celebrated Chinese New Year.  We watched a video and learned a little bit about the preparations that are made and the celebrations that take place.  We tried some noodles, rice, sweet and sour sauce and prawn crackers.  We had the opportunity to try some Chinese writing and learn a few Chinese words.

We had a lot of fun dressing up.

Robert Burns birthday

We celebrated Robert Burns’ birthday by trying some haggis, ‘neeps’ (turnips) and ‘tatties’ (potatoes).  We listened to some Scottish music and performed the Scottish song ‘Coulters Candy’ to an audience in the hall.  We made a graph to show which of the foods we tasted, were our favourites.

Trying out some vegetable printing with the turnips and potatoes.  Some of the children said “potatoes grow in the ground”.   They make chips”.
