Patterns and Winter in the ELC

We have noticed in the ELC that it has been dark in the mornings and have discovered that it is because it is winter. We have been learning all about animals that hibernate in winter and in the Red ELC we have been learning about animals that live in the Arctic and the Antarctic. In the ELC we learn in lots of different ways. In the Green ELC we made a hibernation station and investigated which animals hibernate and how they stay warm and in the Red ELC we made a penguin huddle to see how penguins keep warm.

We have also been investigating patterns. We have followed a pattern and created our own. We even found patterns on our clothes! Look at the different patterns we have created and spotted.

Creativity and Problem Solving

We love solving problems in the ELC rooms and using our imaginations. This week we have been building a walk way over ‘lava’ using crates and tyres, we had to put out our arms to help us balance. We have also been throwing snowballs at the wall and experimented with standing on a crate to see if we could get our snowballs higher. We have even created a den outside.

Inside our ELC rooms some of us have carefully crafted some finger puppets and we have made our own TV show!

Snow!

We had great fun today in the snow! We made snow angels and built snow castles. Our mud kitchen became a snow kitchen and we even did some painting in the snow. We had to make sure we were dressed up warm with our wellies, coats, hats, scarves and gloves. We enjoyed playing in the snow but we also liked coming back inside to warm up!

New Shed in the ELC Garden!

Last week we had a new shed delivered to our ELC garden. We had great fun exploring it and discussing what we could use it for.  These are some of our ideas:

“Let’s make it a house” Millie

“a sofa to relax” Ava

“toys and bikes” Jack

“chairs and cushions” Penny

“pencils” Caris

“stories” Sophie

” a shed for bikes ” Ryan

Parents and Carers we will be asking for your views too on how we could best use this new shed to aid our learning in the ELC.

Money, Money, Money!

We have been enjoying investigating money in both the Red and Green ELC rooms. We have been sorting coins and learning to identify 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins. We have also been learning the nursery rhyme ‘ 5 Current Buns in a Baker’s Shop’, which is our nursery rhyme of the week. We have had fun creating our own current bun shop using a till and playdough.

Fireworks!

We have had a great week in the Green and Red ELC rooms learning all about fireworks. We made our own fireworks using different colours of paint and chalk. We also made rockets and used musical instruments to make the sound of different fireworks going off. We learnt how to stay safe around fireworks:  standing well back from bonfires and wearing gloves if you are holding sparklers.

On Friday we had a fireworks party. We came dressed in our pyjamas, created our own campfires and made mini pizzas for snack, we had great fun!

Outdoor Area Action Day

On Wednesday parents, grandparents and children from Fernielea School came after school to give our outdoor area a make-over. Our fence was painted in beautiful rainbow colours, portable weaving looms, rain gauges, number and alphabet stones were created. The sandpit cover was covered in blackboard paint, an outdoor house and bikes were assembled. Everyone was kept busy! We had a great afternoon and we are so grateful to our team of willing volunteers. The ELC children love their new outdoor area!

This what they said today:

” It looks perfect, all the colours look perfect.” Olivier

“It is so colourful (the fence).” Megan

” I like the yellow house” Caleb

” I like the rainbow things.” Callan

Neon Disco

On Wednesday we had great fun at the Neon Disco the Parent Council organised for us. We looked great in our party clothes and neon accessories. We enjoyed dancing, playing musical games and doing the Hokey-Cokey.

Autumn Walk

On Tuesday the ELC classes went on an autumn walk to the Burnie. We found lots of leaves of different colours and we had fun walking in them and hearing the leaves crunch. We also did some bark rubbings. We took all our autumn finds back to ELC class. We made autumn crowns and created colour charts with our leaves. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who accompanied us on our walk.
