National 5 English is assessed through a mixture of unit assessments (UASPs) and an external exam. The UASPs assess minimum competence in each of the core components of the course. You must pass these in order to sit the final exam. There are four unit assessments:
Analysis and Evaluation
1 Reading
2 Listening
Creation and Production
1 Writing (Creative or Discursive)
2 Talking (AVU)
Final mark
Your final mark is based on your performance in the folio and the exam.
30% Folio – 2 essays, each marked out of 15
Creative – reflective or imaginative
Discursive – argumentative or persuasive
30% Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation (Close Reading)
20% Scottish Text (eg Bold Girls play, Jackie Kay poetry, Kidnapped
novel…)
20% Literature essay (eg Lord of the Flies, War poetry, Film study)
