This week we learned more about the Celts. We visited p3 room12 to see their homemade Celtic roundhouses. Their designs were fantastic! We asked them questions and wrote some positive comments as feedback.

Next week we will make our own roundhouses! Please see the homework grid and letter for more information.

On Wednesday we had a very special visitor… Bren the Celtic expert! He shared lots of facts , information and models of artefacts from Celtic times.

We we got the opportunity to weave wooden walls for roundhouses, make clay pots, drill a hole in wood to create a Celtic pendant, grind wheat to make flour and studied ancient tools!

What a great day!

As you know in maths we have been learning about measuring length and multiplication.

In measurement we have taken part in a range of hands on activities to develop our understanding of:

• estimating
• accurately using measurement tools such as cubes, paper clips, rulers, metre sticks, tape measures, trundle wheels
• measuring to nearest centimetre, metre and some of us explored millimetres!

While learning about multiplication we work on skip counting, we use number lines to physically ‘jump’ the numbers, we create arrays using cubes, we work out word problems involving fish in ponds and cubes in towers, we also play multiplication games as a class like ‘Buzz’ and on the computer on Education City.

We are trying to remember that…

• multiplication means adding equal groups, amounts or numbers to find a total
• learning times tables will help us solve number problems quuickly

  

  

  

In primary 3 room 19 we are lucky to have Mr Scott as a classroom helper each Monday for a few weeks. Mr Scott enjoys football coaching in his spare time and gave us the opportunity to work on our football skills in PE!

What a busy week we had in P3 r19!

On Monday we learned some facts about the famous Rabbie Burns. We know he was a famous Scottish poet who lived over 250 years ago. He wrote songs and poems about love, the farm and politics. To celebrate Burns we eat haggis, wear tartan, do some Scottish country dancing and listen to his well known poems and songs.

We used our imaginations to create our own tartan patterns and haggis beasties during art and writing, have a look….

On Wednesday we did buddy reading with Primary 5. We got the chance to be the experts on giant pandas and how to write a non fiction text. The primary 5s were very impressed and left us a star and a wish as feedback…

On Thursday we had a visit from Mr Hannes at the Montgomery centre. He came to talk to us about Fairtrade products and how we are all connected to people working with  materials which come from all  around the world. Fairtrade products cost a bit more but give the workers who make the products a fairer amount of money.

See if you can spot Fairtrade products the next time you go shopping!

Finally on Friday p3 were given the opportunity to take part in the school Prayer Space activities…

What a busy week!!

In primary 3 as well as keeping our minds active we have been busy keeping our bodies moving too!

We have been active everywhere! We have  been working on our fine motor skills at our desks – lifting our fingers in a sequence our partner taps for us.

In the gym hall we did a range of exercises and activities using lots of equipment with Mr Pirie.

In the GP room we have been dancing following a routine to pop music as well as Scottish country dancing as we learn about Robert Burns.

Back in the classroom we have used the floor space to work on some yoga moves, stretching and strengthening our bodies and core.

As part of our science and technology project we have explored the difference between ‘made materials’ and ‘natural materials’. We know that natural materials come from our planet and made materials have been created by people using chemicals.

First on a Muddy Monday P3 went to the woodies to collect natural materials.

Then we discussed and sorted the materials in to containers and labelled them.

After that we thought of a design or creation and we made our own Wild Art sculptures.

Finally on Wednesday afternoon we held a Wild Art Exhibition to share our sculptures and instructional writing with our peers from primary 1-7.

We we were overwhelmed with so many visitors and they gave us great comments on our feedback sheets.

We thoroughly enjoyed working together, to sing, dance and act out the story of Babushka – the tale of a caring woman who gave gifts and love to those she met on her journey to Bethlehem.

Thank you very much to all parents who came to our p2/3 and p3 nativity performance. We hope you enjoyed it!

In term 2 we have been finding out about Materials as part of our science and technology project. We are focusing on these success criteria:

I can identify the origin of different materials.
I can describe the properties of materials.
I can explain why materials are used for different purposes.
I can identify ways we can reduce, reuse and recycle different materials.

We had fun working with a partner on ‘the egg drop challenge’! We tried to create a container which could protect a boiled egg from a high drop over the infant hall. We had great discussions about the properties of the materials we used in our designs and why our eggs did or did not ‘survive’ the drop.
