As part of our Big Maths scheme in school we do CLIC sessions for core numeracy. Each letter stands for an area of numeracy.
C – Counting
L – Learn Its (these are number facts which we learn so they can be quickly recalled without needing to work out the answer).
I – It’s Nothing New
C – Calculations
We are now covering all the letters in CLIC.
Counting – saying numbers, counting skills and counting actual objects, one more and one less
Learn its – 1+1=2, 2 + 2 =4, 3+3=6, 4+4=8, 5+5=10
It’s Nothing New – doubles to 5
Calculations – basic addition and subtraction (add together and take away), sharing out as a start to division.
If you would like to do some maths homework, you can practise these skills at home. Try counting by saying the numbers up to 10, 20 or beyond if you can manage. If you can go forwards, try going backwards. You can also count actual objects, making sure you count each one once to get the correct total, or try to find the number 1 more or 1 less.
You can also practise the learn its and it’s nothing new by asking What is 1+1? and What is 2+2? What is double 4? or What is double 5?
I have added some resources below which may be useful for practising CLIC at home.
