Term 3 Overview

We have another busy term coming up in P1. Here are some of the activities we will be doing this term:

Literacy

The  children are continuing with the Jolly Phonics program in class. We will cover 2 alphabet sounds most weeks, looking at words beginning with the sound, correct written formation of the letter and using the sound to segment and blend words. We will also begin to look at some ‘diagraphs’, two letters together that make one sound.

The sets of sounds are as follows:

j, z, w, v, y, x

ai, oa, ie, ee, or, ng

oo, ch, sh, th, qu, ou

After each set of sounds we will have a consolidation week for practice of all the sounds covered. Homework on these weeks will be word making with the letter sounds.

We will continue with our reading books on a Monday and Wednesday. The children will read their book with their group and an adult in class and discuss new words.

Common words from each set of reading books will be put in your child’s word pot. These can be used at home to match to the words in the books or to sight read when your child is able.

We will also practise two common words per week. These are words that appear frequently in texts. These are in the white homework book and should be completed for Thursdays.

Numeracy

P1

We will be working on addition and subtraction this term alongside numbers from 10-20.

Our CLIC targets for the term are as follows:

Counting
Saying numbers 1 I can count up to 10

 

Reading Numbers 1 I can read 2d numbers
CORE Numbers 1 I can understand numbers up to 10. (Show visually number stories e.g. 5 = 3+2, 2+3, 4+1, 1+4 etc)
Actual Counting 2,3,4,5 I can count 4 objects.

I can count 5 objects.

I can count 6 objects.

I can count 10 objects

Counting on 1 I can count on and back 1 (e.g. what is 1 more/ less than…)

Our topic maths this term is fractions and decimals. We will continue to work on telling the time, days of the week and months of the year.

Learning Across the Curriculum

We are going to study three topics this term!

  1. Scotland – we will learns lots of facts about Scotland, about food, dancing, myths and legends, geography and castles.
  2. Author study – we have chosen to study the works of Mairi Hedderwick who wrote and illustrated the Katie Morag series. This links to our Scotland topic and will help us learn about life on the Scottish islands.
  3. Eco & Sustainability – we will learn about some ways to protect our planet and reduce waste..

Health and Wellbeing

We will be using the Bounce Back resilience program. In term 2 we focus on courage. looking on the bright side and emotions.

We will explore food and health, with opportunities to take part in simple food preparation.

In PE will be doing a block of traditional Scottish dancing and a  block of gymnastics.

Our gym day is a Friday. The children can come to school on a Friday wearing clothes suitable for gym and do not need to change into shorts.

Science

In our science lessons we will look at forces, electricity, vibrations and waves.

French

French will be delivered by Mrs Forsyth every Wednesday.

Music

Music will be delivered by Mr Smith every Thursday.

Play

We will continue to provide lots of play opportunities and are excited to introduce some new play materials to the class.

Student Teacher

In late February we will welcome a student teacher to our classroom! They will work with us throughout the rest of term 3 and the beginning of term 4!

Term 2 Overview

g, o, u, l, f, b

After each set of sounds we will have a consolidation week for practice of all the sounds covered. Homework on these weeks will be word making with the letter sounds.

We will continue with our reading books on a Monday and Wednesday. The children will hear the extended story in school and can then take the book home to read.

Common words from each set of reading books will be put in your child’s word pot. These can be used at home to match to the words in the books or to sight read when your child is able.

We will also practise two common words per week. These are words that appear frequently in texts. These are in the white homework book and should be completed for Thursdays.

Numeracy

P1

We will continue to work on number to 10 in activity books.

We will also be doing lots of verbal counting and learn its 1+1 and 2+2 for the start of Big Maths CLIC sessions .

Our topic maths this term is time and estimation. We will be looking at the sequence of days, months and seasons and telling the time for o’clock times on digital clocks and clock faces. We will be estimating how many and then counting to check.

Learning Across the Curriculum

We will finish our historical topic of The Stone Age in the first two weeks of term.

Our topic for the rest of the term is Showtime, with the main focus being learning the songs and practising with the other classes for our Christmas performance of The Grumpy Sheep.

Health and Wellbeing

We will be using the Bounce Back resilience program. In term 2 we focus on no bullying and relationships.

In PE will be focusing on using small equipment such as bean bags and balls, rolling and balancing and playing games. Our gym day is a Friday. The children can come to school on a Monday wearing clothes suitable for gym and do not need to change into shorts.

Our outdoor learning session with Mr Miller is on Wednesday 14th December.

RME

Our main RME this term will focus on Christianity and the Christmas Story and traditions. We will also learn about the Hindu festival Diwali and the Jewish festival Hanukkah as these are celebrated during term 2.

French

French will be delivered by Mrs Forsyth every Wednesday.

Music

Music will be delivered by Mr Smith every Thursday.

We will also be taking lots of opportunities to play during our soft starts and at other times throughout the week.

Term 1 Overview

Term 1 is going to be very busy in Primary 1! Here are some of the things we will be learning about:

Literacy

We are beginning the Jolly Phonics program in class. We will cover 2 alphabet sounds per week, looking at words beginning with the sound, correct written formation of the letter, using the sound to segment and blend words.

The first sets of sounds are as follows

We will also be learning the character names from our Oxford Reading Tree story books. They are:

Kipper

Biff

Chip

Floppy

Mum

Dad

These words can be found in your child’s word pot.

We also practise two common words per week. These are words that appear frequently in texts.

Numeracy

We will be introducing the numbers 0-10 through the Number Zoo scheme. This focuses on number recognition, correct written formation and counting skills.

We will also be doing lots of verbal counting skills.

Our topic maths this term is shape and pattern. We will also recognise Maths Week Scotland beginning on the 26th of September.

 

Learning Across the Curriculum

We will cover two topics this term.

Caring Citizens

We will be learning about our school aims and expectations and how to take care of our learning environment. The children will be involved in creating a Class Charter displaying their rights in line with the UNCRC. They will also learn about the Pupil Council and vote for a class representative

Historical – The Stone Age

We will be learning about life in the Stone Age. We will explore how people lived – their homes, clothes, food and art. We will also look at animals. As part of this topic we will create our own cave paintings and necklaces.

Health and Wellbeing

We will be using the Bounce Back program. In term 1 we focus on developing effective social skills and also developing resillience.

In PE will be focusing on movement, including how to move safely within the gym hall and different ways to move in a space.

Science

In science we will be looking at two main areas:

Biodiversity and Interdependence

Beginning to observe living things and becoming aware of how they depend on each other.

Experience growing plants and be able to name some of their basic parts and what they need to help them grow.

Energy Sources and Sustainability

We will be experiencing and using a range of toys and common appliances and learning ‘what makes it go’. We will look at battery,  wind-up, solar and electric power.

French

French will be delivered by Mrs Forsyth. The children are looking at basic words such as greeting, colours and numbers.

Music

Music will be delivered by Mr Smith. The children will be exploring different instruments and rhythms.

 

As you can see, there’s a lot going on in room 1! We will also be taking lots of opportunities to play and enjoy the school as we settle into being in primary 1 and getting used to our new routines.
