Week beginning 10th January

This week the children have been discovering lots of different things about Scotland.

We have been learning about Highland Cows and some children drew their own coos. Did you know that all adult Highland Cows have horns!

We painted representational pictures of Thistles. Did you know that they are a spikey flower? So you have to take care if you see one growing.

We have even made our very own traditional oatcakes (well almost we used dairy free butter instead of animal fat).

The children also took time to explore the sensory bags developing their fine motor skills.

As it is colder the children created bird feeders using bird seed and coconut oil. It was very sticky!

As you can see we have had a very busy week as always.

Welcome Back

Happy New Year and a warm welcome back to you all.

This term, we will be focusing on a letter and number each week.

Week beginning 10th January

Letter of the week

‘a’

We have been looking for things that begin with the letter ‘a’. So far we have found friends beginning with “a” and “a’s” on clothing, but we will continue to look for more things beginning with “a”.

Maybe you can find something at home beginning with “a” and upload this to ILD.

Number of the week

‘1’

How many number 1’s can you see on your way to nursery.

Scotland

This month we will be looking at things that are Scottish. These will include animals, food, objects and symbols.

We will also be learning some Scottish songs and rhymes.

Pumpkin Carving

The children had great fun carving our pumpkins today. They worked well in groups. The children used great looking skills and were careful using the carving tool to cut out the shapes they had drawn.

There was lots of discussion about what the insides looked and felt like.

Welcome

The ELC team would like to welcome our returning children and families back to the setting, and extend a warm welcome to our new children and their families. I am sure we will have lots of adventures, and fun throughout the year.

We have had a busy few weeks here at Abbotswell ELC. The children and the staff have been adjusting to our new daily routine and getting used to being in the setting for whole days.

The children are becoming familiar with our new lunch routine and more children are eating their lunches. Having a picture menu to choose from is certainly making things easier for the children.

Please check back regularly so we can share any news with you and share our learning with you.
