P7 and BoDA maths problem solving

On Friday the P7s gave their maths skills a good work out by tackling problem solving activities from Bridge of Don Academy. Mr Cooper was impressed with our ability to persevere with challenge. Pupils did very well with understanding the problem and trying different strategies to solve them. We’d like to say thank you to our Academy helpers for giving the odd clue to some pairs.

Next Friday we are up to the academy for our one day visit and  are looking forward to that.

BODA transition activity

Today the P7s were visited by S1 pupils from BODA as part of the transition activities organised to help them in the move to secondary after the summer. It was great to see some ex-pupils answer the questions from this years P7s ; helping reduce worries and talking about the different opportunities that await them next year. Everyone found the session useful and we are looking forward to the one day visit to BODA in Term 3.

Here are the P7s in action.

French – term 1

In French we have revised our numbers to 100 and learned some new songs.  We also watched, listened to, illustrated and read “Les trois petits cochons”  (The 3 little pigs).

Today we visited P3 to perform some of our songs and read our story books.  As you can see from the photos, we all enjoyed our visit!

First aid, Tuesday the 18th September

Today P7s did their final block of first aid work focusing on dealing with sprains using arm slings and using CPR. We were all really impressed with the maturity of the pupils who enthusiastically engaged with all the activities and listened attentively to all the information. Here are some of the snaps of the morning.

Bridge of Don Academy Maths Morning

On Friday all the P7s went up to Braehead Primary to experience their first transition activity to prepare them for starting secondary school after the summer. It was a brilliant chance to work with other pupils from Balmedie and Braehead as well as sample some academy maths and meet their new teachers. The maths focused on pupils measuring skills and working out how close they were to achieving the golden ratio in the proportions of their features. We we got back to school everyone had something positive to say with people particularly enjoying either the challenge of the task or getting to meet new people.

Taking photographs was complicated by the large number of people around in a small place, however here are a few images of our intrepid mathematicians.

P7 at TechFest 31/8/18

On Friday, P7 enjoyed travelling to the RGU campus and experiencing 3 techfest activities. Our first activity was a knex lighthouse workshop. Pupils were tasked with creating the tallest and strongest structure that could support a light. The teams worked effectively together and everyone contributed to the task. Some teams showed excellent organisational skills, in that they created their ideas for their model quickly and had the time to build tall and intricate designs, Other teams showed great perseverance and were able to adapt their ideas several times until they achieved a successful model. Well done to all. One group’s model (Greg, Summer and Finley) was so impressive the presenter of the workshop saved it at the end, to show the subsequent groups.

The next activity was exploring chemistry in cooking, where pupils made ice cream using liquid nitrogen and watched Jeff, the jellybaby, sacrifice himself in the name of science to show how much energy he contained.

Our final workshop was about how sound was created by vibrations. Here we learnt about different types of sound wave and how sound is created. All in all the trip was successful because it was enjoyable and we all learnt something new.

P 7 activity time

Since we have a P6/7 class and a P7 class we thought it was important that all the P7s had time together, so we have carried on the tradition of P7 time. This week we had the challenge of making hoop gliders. It was great to see all the P7s working together in teams on the creation, redesign and testing of their models. Katie, Declan and Rebecca devised a design that out performed all the other models, so very well done to them. Here are some of the photos of the session.
