Special visitors in P6

Last week we had two visitors in school. On Monday, PC Seb Cook came to speak to us about e-safety. We learned about how it is important to keep ourselves safe on the internet and why it is important to do so. We are currently busy writing a persuasive letter to parents to make them aware of this.

Week one in Term 4

After a lovely 2 week rest in the Easter Holidays, we are ready to learn new things and make the last term in P6 a successful one!  This week we have been learning how to sketch a self-portrait step by step.  By doing this, it helped us to draw everything in the correct position.  We had to use different methods of using our pencils to create different effects.

In Maths we learned how to times and divide to work out a fraction.  We have also been learning how to convert a fraction to a decimal and percentage.  Some of us found this really easy.  Well done!

We also started our Living and Growing topic this week.  We watched a video about the way we change and grow into puberty.  We had to order the different things that changes in boys and girls.

In Science we are learning about our bones, muscles and joints.  We had to think about whether our bones were rough and bendy or smooth and hard.  What do you think?

EU posters

This week we had to talk about our posters that we made of an EU country of our choice.  We could work with a partner or individually.  Look at some of the fabulous designs.  We all learned something new!  Some of the posters even has a quiz at the end of it, to see who listened well.

Soluble and insoluble experiment

DSC00491DSC00495DSC00497DSC00501DSC00505

Today we did a science experiment to see which substances would dissolve (soluble) and not dissolve (insoluble) in water.  We used the same size of cups and the same amount of substances to ensure that it would be a fair test.  We were quite surprised to see that some of it was not a soluble.  The substances we tested was:  Salt, sugar, chalk, tea leaves, coffee, flour, gravel and sand.

French

We learned a new French song today!  Try and learn it with your child.

Bonjour!  Bonjour!

Comment ‘appelle-tu?

Je m’appelle Benoit  (Alain, Elodie, Sandrine)

Bonjour Benoit! (Alain, Elodie, Sandrine)

We have also been learning colours in French.  Have fun!

What have we been up to?

We have been learning so much about the Victorians these last couple of weeks.  We had a Victorian workshop at school and a Victorian trail through Aberdeen with Mr Alan Patterson, that we enjoyed so much!  We were lucky to get some lovely weather when we were out and about (even though it was still a bit cold!)  All the children participated wonderfully and we got some great feedback from them.

We also went to the Art Gallery to look at some Victorian art.  We learned how to really look carefully at a painting to see all the little details.  The painting we concentrated on is called ‘Flood in the Highlands’.

Term 3 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year and wishing you all the best for 2015.
We will be doing two topics this term. We will be covering  Europe (including Scotland as a mini topic) and ‘The Victorians’.

The class will have the opportunities to learn about school life, inventions and Queen Victoria during this period, including life in Aberdeen and Scotland. Primary 6 will take part in a Victorian workshop and go on a ‘Victorian Trail’ to study different buildings and clues left from this exciting peroid of history. Occasionally, the class will practise their writing, reading, art and ICT skills whilst learning about the Victorians.

We will also be learning about Europe.  We will be looking at the different countries, languages, climates and nature, how it has developed and changed through time, the story of the European Union and what the EU does.  We will be taking part in a country wide quiz.  Children are welcome to join our quiz club and from them, I will pick 5 candidates that will be representing the school at the city wide quiz.  I am very excited about this and hope that we will get your support in this as well.

In Maths the children will be learning about mathematical patterns, statistics and time.  We will also be continuing with our ‘Big Maths’ programme to improve the children’s undertanding and confidence in using a range of mental maths strategies.

In Language we will be reading ‘Street Child’ by Berlie Doherty.  This story will link in with our ‘Victorian’ topic and the children are already responding to it in a positive way.  We will also continue to have reading homework every week.

Some other useful information:

  • HOMEWORK:  Spelling and Maths activities will be given out every Monday and are to be handed in on a Thursday.  The children are expected to share their weekly spelling score with you.  If you have any comments regarding their homework, please feel free to write a note beside your child’s work. Please ensure that ou sign your child’s homework.
  • READING:  Reading homework will continue to be given every week and will also be heard in class in between.  Please sign your child’s record to show the reading has been completed.
  • TIMETABLE:  PE is on a Monday and Wednesday.  Gym kits can remain in the classroom and should be in school on these days.

I am looking forward to what should be an exciting and busy term.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Mrs C Eloff

Merry Christmas!

What a busy and exciting term this has been! The Christmas pantomime was a huge success and the children enjoyed it so much! They sang and acted their hearts out and I am very proud of primary 6.

We went down to the Burnie to help the council plant 2000 bulbs. It is part of their ‘Britain in Bloom’ project. It was a messy job, but come spring, we will be able to go and see how our hard work has paid off!

We have been looking at money through our enterprise. We now know where we should keep it, save it and spend it wisely. One girl even brought in all different types of money from around the world!

Our enterprise project went very well and we made a great profit! Thank you all who came to support us at the Christmas Fair. We hope that you like your photos! We would appreciate any feedback of them.

We all had a lovely time helping the nurseries with their autumn walk (although it was freezing!)
Next term we will be learning all about the Victorians and Europe. I am very excited to announce that a group of 4 children will be taking part in a Euro Quiz in February. This means that we will be studying hard to learn all the facts. They will be representing Fernielea School and I am sure that they will make us proud.
Everyone looked very festive wearing their Christmas jumpers! Well done for taking part in this.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a peaceful and blessed festive time. Hope you all will have a lovely time with your families. See you all in the new year for a busy term!
