Local cancer charity Friends of ANCHOR launched their 20th anniversary project ’20for20′ to celebrate this milestone year. Artists and schools in the north east of Scotland were invited to submit their artwork to design one of the 20 anchors that will go on public display throughout Aberdeen and further afield from Stonehaven to Shetland.
Ferryhill Primary’s submission was chosen from 19 entered schools to have their ‘Big Hero 20’ theme used on one of the anchors. Loosely based on the Big Hero 6 film, the children from P5P and their buddy class P2S/L, designed their own individual superhero masks on made up hero characters. Mindful of the true heroes that are facing cancer, many of the designs reflected the light and dark sides that the patients go through every day during their diagnosis and treatment.
Artist Fiona Chance helped to translate the children’s design theme onto the anchor. She came to the school today, along with fellow artist Margot Montgomery, to help the children place their own masks on the anchor. Photographers from the local papers (P&J and Evening Express) were also at the school to capture the children in action.
The anchor voyage will begin on 1st July and will be on display until the end of October. The Ferryhill anchor will be placed in the school playground throughout the summer holidays.
