UNCRC – Article 36 – Children should be protected from any activity that takes advantage of them or could harm their welfare and development.

On Friday 23rd June the whole school took part in a sponsored run in aid of the NSPCC.  Sports Captains organised this event sending information letters home to all parents, setting the route and collecting the sponsorship money.  Primary 1 to 3 ran for 15 minutes around a route set on the grass while P4 to P7 were set the challenge of doing 4 circuits of the park.  Parents also got the chance to take part in the run.  A big thank you yet again to the parents who supported us by marshaling and encouraging the children.  Watch this space to see how much we raised!

UNCRC -Article 22 (Refugee children): Children have the right to special protection and help if they are refugees (if they have been forced to leave their home and live in another country), as well as all the rights in this Convention.

P5/6G planned and organised ‘Build a Den Day’ in aid of Save the Children.  This year the focus was on how we could help child refugees.  All pupils were asked to come to school dressed in red.  On the build up to the day itself pupils in all classes put both their technology and creativity skills to the test by designing their own dens. Winning teams from each class were then supported to create their Den in the gym.  The results were fantastic! £210 was raised from this day of fun!

UNCRC – Article 30 – Every child has the right to learn and use the language, customs and religion of their family, regardless of whether they are shared by the majority of people in the country they live.

Ferryhill Primary School celebrated an extremely successful international festival, held on Sunday 21st May on the back of the school’s international week. A celebration of food, customs, games, and activities from across the world, the festival attracted a 300+ crowd. Visitors were treated to a tantalising spread of food, stories by Scottish story teller Pauline Cordiner and performances by bagpipe player and ex-pupil Ross Thomson, the school’s own highland dancing group as well as Chinese children’s dancing group Red Phoenix Dance.

Taster dishes ranged from traditional Scottish fayre such as haggis bon bons to Indian, Nigerian, Russian, Polish, Chinese, and many other international flavours. With the majority of food prepared by school parents, festival organisers also received generous contributions from local restaurants and shops such as Wok Wok, Inn at the Park, the Ferryhill House Hotel, Tesco’s, Sainsbury’, Beefy’s Biltong and Aperitivo.

Whilst much of the focus was on food, children were also well catered for with activities including mandala colouring, creating matryoshka dolls, face painting, tattoos, nail painting, and the popular Viking chess game Kubb.

A huge thank you to Angela Wigham and Laura Gerrard for organising this in such a tight timescale.

We are delighted that some of our talented pupils are part of the Active Schools fun run series.

All parents and carers are encouraged to come along to discuss what PTA funds are spent on and plans & ideas for fundraisers.

School Fair – Saturday 10th June, 11am-1pm

The PTA are organising the annual school school fair for families to come along and have fun together, whilst raising funds for the school.  The fair relies on the help of many parents and teachers so if you are able to help in any way please contact Angie Barnett on 07776 292344.

The raffle is our main fundraiser at the fair (£1,500 raised at the Christmas fair), mainly due to the star prize & hampers.  Any donations of prizes, including the star prize, for the adult and child raffle would be very gratefully received.

These real life robots help teach children coding skills, which may benefit them in the future as the digital world progresses.  Primary 6F will be learning more about the robots’ abilities in order to help teach other classes within the school.

International Dress-up Day – Friday 12th May – children may come to school dressed up in their National Costume – as much or as little as they like.  During the week leading up to this children will be treated to sessions by a storyteller – tales from other lands.

International Fair – Sunday 21st May – 2 to 3.30 p.m. – A ‘family’ event involving international food and activities which celebrates the diversity of cultures within the school.

Week Beginning 22nd May – Health Week – lots of activities around the theme of ‘Health’ for the whole school

Primary 1 to Primary 7 Show – Rookie Rockstars – Ferryhill Parish Church – 29th June – 6.30 pm   This show tackles bullying, self-esteem, friendship, courage and perseverance.  This is being run by Rookie Rockstars, a registered Scottish charity.  The children will start rehearsing on Monday 26th June – guaranteed to have great fun! The Primary 7 pupils will put out more information about buying tickets nearer to the date.

Article 29 – Children’s education should develop each child’s personality, talents and abilities to the fullest

Following a previous post where children in Ferryhill school were assessed for potential diving talent, the following pupils have now been selected.

Considering 2000 children were assessed in Aberdeen schools, this is a great achievement.

UNCRC – Article 24 – Every child has the right to the best possible health.  Governments must work to provide good quality heath care, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment so that children can stay healthy.  Richer countries must help poorer countries to achieve this.

P7 took the lead at Assembly today in recognition of World Water Day.  Facts and Figures were used to persuade the rest of the school to save water.  They provided good tips on how to do this.  All children were asked to share their knowledge with their family.
