Writing, Drama and French!

We have been very busy this week in lots of curricular areas.

In maths we have been focussing on time and some of us have been changing 12-hour times to 24-hour clock times. We have also been looking at time intervals and telling the time using concrete materials.

In writing this week we were looking at persuasive posters. We worked in groups to analyse given posters using post-it notes. We had to identify key features of persuasive posters and whether or not the posters we were given were effective. These features included persuasive language, bossy verbs, images, slogans etc

We have also started learning French! This week we have learned the different colours, numbers 1-10 and days of the week. For some of us this has been revision and a reminder but for others it has been brand new. We enjoyed listening and joining in with Youtube videos to help us learning the new vocabulary.

In drama, we have been working with scripts and acting out the Three Little Pigs and the Three Bears. We have been enjoying working with scripts but we need to remember to face the audience and move around the stage area more. We will continue with a variety of scripts over the next few weeks.

Trip to CALA Homes

24.05.17

Today we went on a trip to the local CALA Homes development.

Linking in with our ‘Ready Steady Build’ topic, we were learning about the planning stages of building a house and what has to be done before construction can begin.

We then spoke to Alan who told us about the steps to building a house, starting from the foundations right through until decoration and furniture.

We learned about the importance of safety and how all of the workers need to be given an induction before being allowed onto the building site.

Next we split into two groups to view the 2 show homes and take part in a site walk where we walked along the path and viewed a house currently being built and compared it to the finished building.  We asked lots of questions and enjoyed our visit! Thank you to everyone at CALA Homes for having us 🙂

Slime! (Non-Newtonian Fluid)

This week we made slime!

We learned how it can be a liquid and a solid too!

If we punched the slime quickly, it would be hard (a solid).

However, if we slowly put our fingers in it, it was a liquid!

We also discovered that if we played with it and shaped it into a ball using our hands, the slime would keep its shape. As soon as we stopped moulding it, it turned into a liquid again!

We all loved playing with it and getting messy!! 🙂

AWPR Visit

The Primary 5s had a presentation all about the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route.

The Primary 5s had a presentation all about the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route.

We learned that the peripheral route is NOT a bypass as you can leave the road at different points to get to different destinations, whereas a bypass you have to stay on the road all of the time.

We were most interested in learning and hearing about all of the different types of animal that have been re-homed and protected to make way for the AWPR.

We learned about the environmental statement that the AWPR work must stick to and all of the rules that must be followed. For example, noise levels,  hours of work and stopping work as soon as any animal nest is discovered.

In class we have been looking at reasons FOR and AGAINST the AWPR. Using our questionnaires that we completed for homework, we had to arrange parents’ comments under ‘FOR’ or ‘AGAINST.’

Next week we are going to use our points, questionnaires and new knowledge from today’s presentation to write a BALANCED ARGUMENT using evidence and looking at both sides of the AWPR argument.

Reflections and Mirrors

We have been learning about reflections and mirrors. We watched some videos and learnt some interesting facts about these two things . Mirrors can make you all different shapes and sizes. you can get reflections from lots of different materials like windows, water , cars and metal.

Here are some photos of the last few weeks!!

We will be working very hard to make sure we add lots more blog posts before the end of p5 – stay tuned!

Some of us sorting characteristics into ‘inherited’ and ‘non-inherited.’

Helping our P2 paired reading partners with their ‘daily mile.’

Our first topic lesson – building towers with marshmallows and spaghetti! yum!

Creating skyline pictures to show different types of buildings and their reflections. We used chalk, black pen and dark paper.

BP Lego Robotics Workshop

On Tuesday 1st November, we were very lucky to be chosen to take part in a BP lego robotics workshop for the whole day.

John and Dave came in to teach and show us all about programming and how we can use laptops and devices to work and create our own robots. We had to first create basic structures before we could then use them to create a lion that yawned, snored and even sat up! The next robot we created was a bird with flapping wings and tail. In the afternoon, we got to choose further robots to create. The day involved working with a partner and lots and lots of teamwork and we all managed to do this incredibly well and we had great results!

Our new topic for Term 2!

Our topic for this term is….. FAIRTRADE!

The class were given a piece of Fairtrade banana and a piece of Fairtrade chocolate to eat as a clue to our new topic.

They were then given a piece of puzzle each and the class had to create 5 puzzles showing pictures that gave further clues to what our new topic might be.

Next the children took part in a group task. Each group was given job specifications of the people involved in growing and exporting bananas. They had to give each person in their group a job specification to read to the group. They then had to split up 30p that would be charged for a banana and decide how the 30p should be fairly split between the jobs. The class were very shocked at how little money the banana workers received even though they worked 14hour days of very physical work. You can see some of their reactions in the pictures below…

We have also been working together as a class to create a new topic wall display.

Roald Dahl Day + Problem Solving Task

On the 13th September it was Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday. We celebrated by dressing up as a character from one of his books. We did lots of stuff like problem solving and we had to put 6 of his characters at different places on a dinner table and we had rules of who could not sit where. We also had a morning challenge where we had to name as many of Roald Dahl’s books and characters as we could. Some boys dressed up as the BFG and Mike TV and some girls dressed up as Matilda and Miss Trunchbull. It was a really fun day!

Paired Reading

P5D have paired up with P2, and have been reading to each other. Some of us have two people to read for so some of us have very nice partners. We have to read to them sometimes and sometimes they read to us. Sometimes we share our writing with them that we have been doing in class. This week we had to help them to read and complete a comprehension task all about Roald Dahl. Abbie’s partner is Noah, Ruadhan’s partner is Aaryan and Jessica’s partner is Erin.

Letter to Roald Dahl

We wrote letters to Roald Dahl and we asked him questions about his life. We all wish we was still alive and he could write more books! In the letter we told him what out favourite books are. Our favourites are The Magic Finger, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach. Our favourite characters are the BFG, Matilda and Willy Wonka. In the letters we learned how to address the letter properly. In our letters we mentioned what we dressed up as on Roald Dahl Day.  We also asked him interesting questions.

Gym

In gym we have been learning about fitness Miss Mair made a game called fitness monopoly and fitness bingo. In Monopoly we had to roll the dice and whatever one you landed on was a fitness stretch. Then you had to do the stretch. If you landed on jail you had to sing a nursery rhyme and do jumping jacks or running on the spot.
