Trip to CALA Homes

24.05.17

Today we went on a trip to the local CALA Homes development.

Linking in with our ‘Ready Steady Build’ topic, we were learning about the planning stages of building a house and what has to be done before construction can begin.

We then spoke to Alan who told us about the steps to building a house, starting from the foundations right through until decoration and furniture.

We learned about the importance of safety and how all of the workers need to be given an induction before being allowed onto the building site.

Next we split into two groups to view the 2 show homes and take part in a site walk where we walked along the path and viewed a house currently being built and compared it to the finished building.  We asked lots of questions and enjoyed our visit! Thank you to everyone at CALA Homes for having us 🙂

Slime! (Non-Newtonian Fluid)

This week we made slime!

We learned how it can be a liquid and a solid too!

If we punched the slime quickly, it would be hard (a solid).

However, if we slowly put our fingers in it, it was a liquid!

We also discovered that if we played with it and shaped it into a ball using our hands, the slime would keep its shape. As soon as we stopped moulding it, it turned into a liquid again!

We all loved playing with it and getting messy!! 🙂

AWPR Visit

The Primary 5s had a presentation all about the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route.

The Primary 5s had a presentation all about the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route.

We learned that the peripheral route is NOT a bypass as you can leave the road at different points to get to different destinations, whereas a bypass you have to stay on the road all of the time.

We were most interested in learning and hearing about all of the different types of animal that have been re-homed and protected to make way for the AWPR.

We learned about the environmental statement that the AWPR work must stick to and all of the rules that must be followed. For example, noise levels,  hours of work and stopping work as soon as any animal nest is discovered.

In class we have been looking at reasons FOR and AGAINST the AWPR. Using our questionnaires that we completed for homework, we had to arrange parents’ comments under ‘FOR’ or ‘AGAINST.’

Next week we are going to use our points, questionnaires and new knowledge from today’s presentation to write a BALANCED ARGUMENT using evidence and looking at both sides of the AWPR argument.

Reflections and Mirrors

We have been learning about reflections and mirrors. We watched some videos and learnt some interesting facts about these two things . Mirrors can make you all different shapes and sizes. you can get reflections from lots of different materials like windows, water , cars and metal.

by Lochlan, Mitchell and Rachel.

Here are some photos of the last few weeks!!

We will be working very hard to make sure we add lots more blog posts before the end of p5 – stay tuned!

Some of us sorting characteristics into ‘inherited’ and ‘non-inherited.’

Helping our P2 paired reading partners with their ‘daily mile.’

Our first topic lesson – building towers with marshmallows and spaghetti! yum!

Creating skyline pictures to show different types of buildings and their reflections. We used chalk, black pen and dark paper.
