Homework Collage

A big well done to all the boys and girls who have completed their homework collage.  These are really looking fantastic and there has been a lot of effort put in.  They will make a fantastic display!

If you have not yet managed to access Sumdog for homework please do that this week.  This will really help with mental maths and make your child more confident completing Big Maths on a Friday.   This is a good site to use on a regular basis.

P2 M are really beginning to get to grips with basic French and are enjoying learning new vocabulary week on week.  They have been counting to 20, learning the days of weeks and are now learning about colours.

A useful website for you and your child to go onto is the BBC, Schools, Primary Languages.   As well as games there are songs, videos and short audio clips to help with pronunciation.   Please find the link below.

Numeracy

P1010598

Some of the boys and girls in P2 M have started to look at the concept of division.  The children had to take a total number and see how many ways they could group the items.  In the example above there was 4 groups of 5.  The children had to make sure that each group had an equal number.   Here are some more pictures of the children working on dividing a total into groups.

P1010595

Here the children were playing with the linking elephants.  They had the number 14 and made 2 groups of 7.

P1010594

Here the children were using gems.  They had number 20 and made 5 groups of 4.

P1010578

The children were also able to write out their calculations using the words ‘groups of’.

P1010588

Another group of children within the class were learning about multiplication.  Working as part of a team they made posters to show their understanding.

P1010575

This really helped them to understand what 5×5 means as they had to break the sum in to parts(5+5+5+5+5 or 5 groups of 5).  As well as this they had to take turns and listen to one another to work successfully as a team.  The pictures below show the children working together, as part of a team, to make their posters.

P1010581We can also use the computers to do problem solving activities.  Here is one of the girls playing a Function Machine’ game. She had to choose a target number and make that number using multiplication and addition.

Reading with P6 S

P2 M have been enjoying paired reading activities with P6 S on a Wednesday afternoon.  This is a good chance for your child to share their reading book and other stories with the older children.  During these sessions the older children also read to the younger children.  This helps the children to see how expression can be used to tell a story.  They can also work on decoding and sounding out words together.

As well as all this it also helps children to develop their love for literacy.  Enjoying and telling stories together!

Multiplication/ Repeated Addition

P1010471

In number work we have begun looking at repeated addition and multiplication.  This is something you could begin to work on with your child, explaining that the multiplication sign (x) means groups of.

P1010469

P1010468

P1010466

At this stage it is really important that your child can understand what the sum really means.  Using concrete objects will help them to see and understand what is is they are doing.  You could use coins, smarties, raisins…

Example-

3×4=?

Means 3 groups of 4

4+4+4=

Happy Puzzle Company

Primary 2 had a fun day last Thursday, taking part in activities set up by the, ‘Happy Puzzle Company.’  The focus here was on team work and problem solving.  They really had to listen to one another and take turns to complete the activities.  Talk to your child about what they were doing in the different activities shown below.

The children also worked in small groups and teams within and across the three P2 classes.  These activities all involoved problem solving.   They were using technology, programming beebots, completing puzzle challenges (borrowed from Satrosphere) and solving an alien mystery using clues.

February 8, 2016 by Rosie Moyes | 0 comments

Primary 2 have begun the topic, ‘Science Champions’ with P7D.  Through this topic the children undertake a number of science challenges.  These are done on a Monday and a Thursday afternoon.  The children have been teamed up with buddies in P7 who guide them through the experiments.  The children really enjoyed the session on Thursday.  They were able to make predictions, observations and draw conclusions.  Below are some pictures of the children working with the P7 buddies.

Each child will be given their own username and password for the site, this can be found in their homework jotter.

A fun approach to mental maths, your child will enjoy accessing and playing the games.

To login go to the following web address-

Writing and Maths

This week the children enjoyed creating their own acrostic poems.  They worked with a partner, creating some fantastic work.  They managed to use some great WOW words!

In maths we are continuing to learn about time.  This is something that you may wish to work on with your child.  Starting with o’clock, then half past and then quarter past.

Here are some links to games you may wish to play, with varying difficulty-

 Other Information

In reading we have been learning about characters.  This is a good thing to discuss with your child at home when reading.  Here are some questions you may ask:

1. Can you name the characters in the book?

2. Who is the main character?

3.Who is your favourite character?

4. Can you describe your characters apperance?

5.  Can you describe your characters personality?

Thank you for taking the time to look at the class blog! Here are a couple of pictures of the children playing in the sand tray.  They were having great fun pretending this was the surface of the moon (flour, baby oil, tin foil scrunched up and little gems).
