Just a note…

Friday 24th March

Just a little reminder that tomorrow is Open Day at Cults Primary and it is also

Comic Relief – Red Nose Day. Come s you please, maybe try to wear something RED

and bring £1 to donate to this good cause.

Playground Pals

Read through your Playground Pals application form at home and think about whether you would like to be part of our team of pupils helping to promote positive playtimes and lunchtimes outside.

If you are interested, then complete the application and return it with your homework next week. If there are too many applications we will hold interviews before the end of term.

Homework this week

We have been investigating ways of collecting and displaying information this week in our maths.

For homework you have a traffic survey to complete. Make sure you work with an adult to complete this.

Choose somewhere safe to stand – if you can see a road from a window in your house or your garden that would be perfect. Or you could go for a short walk to complete your survey.

Time yourself. You have only to gather data for 10 minutes. Record the date and time you did your survey on your sheet.

Week beginning 20th March

We have another busy week ahead this week with lots going on in school.

A Reminder – Friday 24th is our school Open Day.

Your child will bring an invitation for you home with their homework on Wednesday.  We will be welcoming you in to the school to see what we have been doing this term. You will have the chance to try some learning activities with your child and they will be able to show you round the class and other parts of the school. (There will be sheets for you to sign your child in / out of the class.)

It is also Red Nose Day. Children are encouraged to come as they please but try to wear something red and to donate £1 to Comic Relief.

A busy couple of weeks!

We have been very busy so far this month in all areas of our learning. We ave had Miss Ashmore working with us in class too and have been visiting our P7 class in the red unit twice a week for our Science Champion sessions which just finished this week.

Space

In our topic we have built our own model rockets, done some very good work with a partner on some space themed problem solving, made predictions and then tried out a balloon rocket experiment and also created two special rockets and a launch pad for our bottle rocket experiment.

Check out the link below to watch some of the clips we watched in class to help us. Our rockets worked really well but it was hard for our class photographers to catch them in action!

Numeracy

We have been investigating  2D and 3D shapes. Through lots of practical tasks in school, and in our homework, we have looked at the  properties of different shapes, practised saying and spelling their names, made models from nets which we used to make our 3D shape mobiles and built some models.

February

February has been a busy month and even with the mid-term break we have been working hard in class and at home as well where we have been preparing our space talks. We have Miss Ashmore working in class for the next few weeks and she will return to P2C again after the Easter holidays.

We are working with P7 on Science Champions activities. These photos are from our very first session through in the red unit and we really enjoyed all the things they had organised for us to do to get to know each other better. We will update you on our progress!

Trip to Aberdeen Science Centre 27/01/17

Thank you to all the parents who were able to come with the primary two classes on Friday to visit the Aberdeen Science Centre.

A good time was had by all and the children returned to school even more enthusiastic aboutSpace than they had been before!

The planetarium show, although quite complicated, is a different way of looking at things – lying down – and the dome is fun to go into.

The children watched the planetarium show first then had time on the floor exhibits including the very popular new attraction all about SPACE.

Our second workshop was called “Destination Space” and was a fun, interactive look at going to and working on the International Space Station (ISS).

Our Space Topic

We have been busy in class finding out about the planets, the relationship between the sun, moon and Earth, the phases of the moon, the first man on the moon and lots more.

We made models to show the orbits of Earth around the sun and the moon around Earth as well as printing the phases of the moon using gold and silver paint and crumpets!

We have had some fun listening to space-themed fiction books. After reading Aliens love Underpants by Claire Freedman we have started to make our own collage aliens  have spatter-painted paper for the background of our wall display in the style of Jackson Pollock like this one.

We are busy paint some of the parts to build a rocket after one reading group had a book about this very topic.

Pupils have been keen to share what they know – and they know a lot – as well as to find out more about certain topics. We have a large collection of non-fiction books for reading and researching in class and some people have brought items in from home to help us learn even more.

AFC football sessions

We have already had two sessions of football coaching on Monday mornings and everyone is enjoying the lively start to our week! The photos are maybe not the best …but it is hard to catch us when we are all moving so fast.

Story sack

Each week someone from our class is chosen to be the lucky person taking home the story sack. They bring it back the next week on Tuesday, our library day, and share their book with the rest of the class before choosing the next person to take the sack home. Someone takes on the role of  “photographer” to take a picture of the story being shared in the library. These are some of the pictures from recent weeks.

Welcome back!

Welcome back after the Christmas break. We hope you have had a relaxing and enjoyable time and that the children are all ready for a busy start to 2017.

Everyone seemed eager to get started on Monday morning. We have already investigated what we know about our new topic – SPACE – and have thought about some things we would like to find out more about.  We will be visiting Aberdeen Science Centre later this month. (If anyone is looking for something to do this Sunday 15th January, they are launching their new space station exhibit – entry £3 per head, open 10am – 5pm). We will be exploring this new activity as well as enjoying some workshops and all the regular floor exhibits when we visit.

Homework this week is just spelling words with the au sound and a reading task.

Our timetable this term remains much the same – library is still Tuesday pm and the children have been enjoying taking their turn to share a favourite book from home in our Story Sack. We will be having 6 weeks of AFC football coaching starting on Monday 16th January. Children also have aerobics on a Tuesday am and PE with Miss Mair on a Wednesday am. Please can you make sure they bring their indoor shoes and PE kit back to school by next week.
