Term 1 is going to be very busy in Primary 1\/2! Here are some of the things we will be learning about:<\/p>\n
Literacy<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n P1<\/strong><\/p>\n The P1 children are beginning the Jolly Phonics program in class. We will cover 2 alphabet sounds most weeks, looking at words beginning with the sound, correct written formation of the letter and using the sound to segment and blend words.<\/p>\n The first sets of sounds are as follows<\/p>\n s, a, t, i, p, n<\/p>\n c.k, e, h, r, m, d<\/p>\n We will also be starting to read by learning the character names from our Oxford Reading Tree story books. They are:<\/p>\n Kipper, Biff, Chip, Floppy, Mum, Dad<\/p>\n These words can be found in your child’s word pot.<\/p>\n We also practise two common words per week. These are words that appear frequently in texts.<\/p>\n P2<\/strong><\/p>\n The P2 children will be working on their own phonic sounds each week with spelling lists of words containing the sound, and two common words.<\/p>\n Reading will be done in school on a Monday and Thursday and the children will also take these books home to read.<\/p>\n Our focus for grammar is capital letters and alphabetical order.<\/p>\n Numeracy<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n P1<\/strong><\/p>\n We will be introducing the numbers 0-10 through the Number Zoo scheme. This focuses on number recognition, correct written formation and counting skills.<\/p>\n We will also be doing lots of verbal counting skills.<\/p>\n Our topic maths this term is shape and pattern. We will also recognise Maths Week Scotland beginning on the 26th of September.<\/p>\n P2<\/strong><\/p>\n The P2 children will do daily CLIC sessions and Beat That at the end of the week.<\/p>\n They will also focus on 2D and 3D shape and pattern.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Learning Across the Curriculum<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n We will cover two topics this term.<\/p>\n Caring Citizens<\/strong><\/p>\n We will be learning about our school aims and expectations and how to take care of our learning environment. The children will be involved in creating a Class Charter displaying their rights in line with the UNCRC. They will also learn about the Pupil Council and vote for a class representative.<\/p>\n Historical – The Stone Age<\/strong><\/p>\n We will be learning about life in the Stone Age. We will explore how people lived – their homes, clothes, food and art. We will also look at animals. As part of this topic we will create our own cave paintings and necklaces.<\/p>\n Health and Wellbeing<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n We will be using the Bounce Back program. In term 1 we focus on mental and emotional values and people bouncing back to encourage resilience.<\/p>\n In PE will be focusing on movement, including how to move safely within the gym hall and different ways to move in a space. Our gym day is a Monday.<\/p>\n Our first outdoor learning session with Mr Miller is on Wednesday 28th September.<\/p>\n Science<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n In science we will be looking at two main areas:<\/p>\n Biodiversity and Interdependence<\/strong><\/p>\n Looking at simple food chains and how animals and plants depend on each other for food.<\/p>\n Looking at plants and finding out what they need to help them grow and develop.<\/p>\n Energy Sources and Sustainability<\/strong><\/p>\n We will be experiencing and using a range of toys and common appliances and learning ‘what makes it go’. We will look at battery,\u00a0 wind-up, solar and electric power.<\/p>\n French<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n French will be delivered by Mrs Forsyth every Wednesday.<\/p>\n Music<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Music will be delivered by Mr Smith every Thursday.<\/p>\n We will also be taking lots of opportunities to play and enjoy the school as we settle into our new class and new routines.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Term 1 is going to be very busy in Primary 1\/2!
