Term 3 Overview

We have another busy term coming up in P1/2. Here are some of the activities we will be doing this term:

Literacy

P1

The  children are continuing with the Jolly Phonics program in class. We will cover 2 alphabet sounds most weeks, looking at words beginning with the sound, correct written formation of the letter and using the sound to segment and blend words. We will also begin to look at some ‘diagraphs’, two letters together that make one sound.

The sets of sounds are as follows:

j, z, w, v, y, x

ai, oa, ie, ee, or, ng

oo, ch, sh, th, qu, ou

After each set of sounds we will have a consolidation week for practice of all the sounds covered. Homework on these weeks will be word making with the letter sounds.

We will continue with our reading books on a Monday and Thursday. The children will read their book with their group and an adult in class and discuss new words.

Common words from each set of reading books will be put in your child’s word pot. These can be used at home to match to the words in the books or to sight read when your child is able.

We will also practise two common words per week. These are words that appear frequently in texts. These are in the white homework book and should be completed for Thursdays.

P2

The P2 children will be working on their own phonic sounds each week with spelling lists of words containing the sound, and two common words. Please write out the words and sentences for homework each week and spelling test will be on a Friday.

Sounds for this term:

i-e, o-e, u-e, wh, ai, ay, y=ay, ea, ie, or, al

Reading will be done in school on a Monday and Thursday and the children will also take these books home to read. Comprehension related to the reading books will be done in school.

Our focus for grammar this term is adjectives (describing words). We will try to use some in our writing.

This term we will be writing some poetry and some instructions.

Numeracy

P1

We will be working on addition and subtraction this term alongside numbers from 10-20. Numeracy targets for CLIC are in a post with a CLIC overview for the term and some suggested resources which can be used at home.

Our topic maths this term is fractions and decimals. We will continue to work on telling the time, days of the week and months of the year.

P2

The P2 children will do daily CLIC sessions and Beat That at the end of the week. Numeracy targets for CLIC are in a post with a CLIC overview for the term and some suggested resources which can be used at home.  We will continue with number to 100 and do some written addition and subtraction.

Topic maths for this term is expressions and equations ( compare, describe and show number relationships using symbols) and fractions and decimals looking at halves and quarters.

Learning Across the Curriculum

We are going to study three topics this term!

  1. Scotland – we will learns lots of facts about Scotland, about food, dancing, myths and legends, geography and castles.
  2. Author study – we have chosen to study the works of Mairi Hedderwick who wrote and illustrated the Katie Morag series. This links to our Scotland topic and will help us learn about life on the Scottish islands.
  3. Eco & Sustainability – we will learn about some ways to protect our planet and reduce waste..

Health and Wellbeing

We will be using the Bounce Back resilience program. In term 3 we focus on courage. looking on the bright side and emotions.

We will explore food and health, with opportunities to taste some food.

In PE will be doing a block of traditional Scottish dancing and a  block of gymnastics.

Our gym day is a Monday. The children can come to school on a Monday wearing clothes suitable for gym and do not need to change into shorts.

Science

In our science lessons we will look at forces, electricity, vibrations and waves.

French

French will be delivered by Mrs Forsyth every Wednesday.

Music

Music will be delivered by Mr Smith every Thursday.

Play

We will continue to provide lots of play opportunities and are excited to introduce some new play materials to the class.

Student Teacher

In late February we will welcome a student teacher to our classroom! They will work with us throughout the rest of term 3 and the beginning of term 4!
