Reading

Reading will be done on Monday and Thursday this week.

Literacy

Please continue with ‘Teach you monster to read.’

We will be starting to revisit the formation of all letters sounds.  This week please focus on writing c, a and d.  We call these ‘caterpillar letters’  because we start them by writing a curly c like a caterpillar.  You could use pens and paper, shaving foam, finger paint, whiteboards and pens.

 

Maths

Please play the subtraction game that was sent home.  This will be sent home on Tuesday.  You will need some counters and dice.  If you don’t have dice at home you get some fantastic free dice apps to download.   Please remember that when we take away everything, 0, 1 or 2 we don’t use our fingers.

Please note:  the forest will be cancelled this week.  Apologies for any inconvenience caused.  We will reschedule alternative dates very soon.

 

 

Homework wb 23.5.16

This week we are focussing on reading for enjoyment in class.  This will be the main focus for our homework too.  Your child will not take a reading book home this week.

Reading task

Try reading lots of different books at home this week.  We have been learning about rhyming books, fiction books and non-fiction books.  Try reading books under each of these categories for fun.  Get someone to take a photograph of you reading one of these books in an unusual place e.g. under a tree, on a swing etc.  Please bring the photograph to school next Wednesday (1st June).  There will be a prize for the most interesting or unusual photograph.  We will be displaying these photographs in our classroom to try and promote reading for enjoyment.

Please try playing ‘Teach your monster to read’ for 15-20 minutes this week.

Maths task

Learn-its:  please revise all learn-its: 1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, 2+1, 2+3

Please practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s this week.  You could do this using the SPLAT square – click here or whack a mole – click here (please change the step size to 2,5 or 10).

You could also try clapping, jumping, hopping as you count up in 2s, 5s or 10s.  We do this in class a lot so you should manage to do this at home.

PLEASE NOTE:  WE WILL NOT BE GOING TO THE FOREST THIS WEEK AS MRS DUNCAN WILL BE OUT OF CLASS ON WEDNESDAY.  APOLOGIES FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.  

 

Forest Session 4

We had another great day in the forest today.  We checked on our bird feeders and many of us were delighted to find that our entire bird feeders had been eaten!  We also tied our ‘Scoop your poop’ posters to encourage other forest users to keep our outdoor learning space tidy.

We had a picnic lunch in the forest.  We all enjoyed choosing a special spot to sit with our friends and eat our lunch.

After lunch we found out about habitats.  We did a reading task to find out about different habitats that forest animals live in.  Then, in small groups, we made our own habitat for an animal we had read about.  There was great teamwork and fantastic problem solving happening everywhere!

Minibeast Research

Today we tried to find out more about a minibeast of our choosing using the iPads.  We chose a minibeast and then watched a video about it on our own iPads.  We then shared and wrote down some of our nely discovered facts!  It was great to discover so many new things that we didn’t know about minibeasts!

Homework wb 16.5.16

Literacy

This week is a revision week for sounds.   Please revise our three latest sounds.

Elephants: oi, aw (as in saw), ue

Tigers and Pandas: Oa, ai, ck

You could do this by:

  • Making some words  containing the sounds with scrabble tiles or magnetic letters
  • Using a paintbrush and water to write the words or sounds on paving slabs outside
  • Playing catch with a ball whilst spelling the word
  • Rainbow writing – writing the sound and then writing on top with different colours
  • Crossword writing – try writing your words in a crossroad.  We will do this at school on Monday.   You can look at photos on the Blog to show you how to do it.

Please encourage correct letter formation.  🙂

Please continue to play ‘Teach your Monster to read’ for 15-20 minutes each week.

Maths

Please try getting your child to teach you how to play ‘Tom Thumb, Tom Thumb…what is your sum?’  You could then use this game to ask them a variety of addition or subtraction sums up to 10 (or beyond for some).  Please remind your child that we don’t need to use our fingers when adding or subtracting 0, 1 or 2.

Minibeast Tally charts

We have been using our skills in counting up in 5s to make tally charts and graphs this week.  We asked all our friends in the class ‘What is your favourite minibeast?’ We had to record our results using a tally chart.

Today we used our tally charts to complete our graphs in the sunshine.

Forest Session Week 3

We had fantastic day in the forest in the sunshine today.  Many of us had said we wanted to make food for the animals.  Today we did that!

We used natural materials that we could leave in the forest to make a delicious bird feeder.  We had to poke lots and lots of seeds into an apple, attach 2 sticks for a perch and tie it onto a tree.  We all tried hard to not give up even though it was a tricky task.  We can’t wait to see if the birds enjoy our bird feeders.

We also had some more free-play in ‘Jurassic World’.  We climbed trees, threw moss, continued building our mud bridge, built dens and had fun running with our friends.  It was a great day!

Forest Changes for Wednesday 18th May – Important

The children are desperate to have their lunch in the forest.  We will now be doing this on Wednesday 18th May.  Our forest session on this day will be 11.15am until 2.30pm.  Parent helpers for this session are:  Veer, Axel, Oliver, Neve, Abbey, Holly and Timo.  Please let me know at pick up if you are unable to help with these new times.

On Wednesday 18th May the children (and parent helpers)  should bring:

  • a packed lunch and a snack
    • 2 bottles of water
  • suncream and a sun hat
  • The usual items required for all forest sessions e.g. waterproof trousers, extra fleece or jumper, sturdy shoes etc
