Our 3rd<\/sup> Eco Flag!<\/u><\/strong><\/h1>\n

We were awarded our 3rd<\/sup> Eco flag! This work complements our Rights work and again, our children including the ECO team deserve a big well done in promoting all things environmental at Keills.\u00a0 (June 2025)<\/h2>\n

Hope spot mosaic project<\/span><\/h1>\n

“We visited Keills Primary School on Islay last week with Heart of Argyll Wildlife (@argyll_beaver_centre) and local mosaic and felt artist, Emma Baker (@tidelineisleofislay), we visited the beautiful Loch Gruinart. Loch Gruinart is an @rspb.scotland nature reserve. A tidal sea loch with expanses of sand, mudflats and little rocks to look under and then put back.<\/h2>\n

Thanks to the @oystershed_islay who provided a beautiful classroom and delicious cookies for our species class.<\/div>\n
Then we explored the seashore. One of the girls found this Rock Goby (fish) and a group of boys found beautiful colourful worms including this black lugworm (not black!) And many more creatures too!<\/div>\n
The following days, the children enjoyed crafting creatures for a collaborative mosaic. We’re looking forward to seeing it all come together and we’ll be sharing more about this at a later date!” – From Emma Baker, Tidelines.<\/div>\n

Be the Change Fairtrade Breakfast\"\" \"\" \"\" \"\" \"\" \"\" \"\" \"\"<\/span><\/h1>\n

The Eco Committee agreed that this term we should participate in Fairtrade Fortnight to raise awareness of Fairtrade products and fairer trade. This year the theme for Fairtrade Fortnight was \u2018Be the Change\u2019 which fits really well with our Rights Respecting Schools focus on taking action, getting involved and being global citizens. They decided that we should have a Fairtrade Breakfast involving family and friends.\u00a0 During KIT (Keills Improvement Team) meetings the children learned what Fairtrade meant and the impact of Fairtrade on farmers, workers and the environment. They participated in different activities and played games to develop their knowledge and understanding. They also investigated and discussed the children\u2019s rights that were being met by the positive impact of Fairtrade, as well as how Fairtrade supports the UN Global Goals.<\/p>\n

The children planned, organised and prepared for our Fairtrade Breakfast. The children wrote invitations to parents and family members; baked chocolate and banana muffins,\u00a0 banana waffles and chocolate and banana squares; prepared menus, practised being waiters and waitresses; practised being chefs; filled and decorated the Fairtrade hamper for the raffle; rehearsed welcoming parents and family to the school; wrote welcome \u00a0and closing speeches; prepared how to do the Fairtrade survey; made decorations for the hall including bunting,\u00a0 a \u2018Be the Change, Fairtrade Breakfast\u2019 banner and decorating the tables with vases of flowers; revisited the UNCRC and UN Global Goals to be displayed on information boards and practised the games to play with parents and family members. Every child was involved and they were all very, very busy, working hard to get everything together.<\/p>\n

The children were all organised for the big day and our \u2018Be the Change \u2013 Fairtrade Breakfast\u2019, was a huge success!<\/p>\n

Planning for a Sustainable Future for our School <\/u><\/strong><\/h1>\n

As part of the climate change focus, the children were given a group challenge to create a model of our school in the future – 2045. The children had to apply their knowledge and understanding of climate action, and incorporate as many different elements to create an eco friendly school.<\/p>\n

The Eco Committee have been working hard agreeing new Eco Actions and finding a way of displaying our new action plan.<\/p>\n

As a whole school community, the children decided that we need to work on four topics:<\/p>\n
