This topic considers the impact of technology on the soldiers on the Western Front. It also considers the way in which the war changed life for people at home as the war began to impact on every aspect of life both during and after the war.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>British Context: The Atlantic Slave Trade, 1770-1807:<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A study of the nature of the British Atlantic slave trade in the late eighteenth century, changing attitudes towards it in Britain and the pressures that led to its abolition, illustrating the themes of rights, exploitation and culture.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>European &amp; World Context: Hitler and Nazi Germany, 1919-1939:<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A study of attempts to establish democracy in Weimar Germany, the reasons for its collapse and the nature of the Nazi State.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong><u>Higher<\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Topics studied at Higher level are as follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>British Section: Britain, 1851-1951:<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Development of the United Kingdom into a modern democracy and the development of the role of the state in the welfare of its citizens. Themes: Authority, ideology and rights.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>European &amp; World Section: USA, 1918-1968<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Growing tensions in American society, focusing on racial divisions, economic difficulties, the growth of federal powers and the struggle for civil rights. Themes: ideology, identity and rights.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>Scottish Section: Migration and Empire, 1830-1939:<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Population movement and social and economic change in Scotland and abroad between 1830 and 1939. Themes: empire, migration and identity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"region region-content\">\n<section id=\"block-system-main\" class=\"block block-system clearfix\">\n<article id=\"node-673\" class=\"node node-department clearfix\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<div>\n<h3><strong>How will I be assessed?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At\u00a0<strong>National 4 level,\u00a0<\/strong>pupils will be expected to pass all three unit assessments and an internally assessed Added Value Unit on a topic of their choice.<\/p>\n<p>At\u00a0<strong>National 5 level<\/strong>, pupils will research an assignment topic within class time and write an essay on that topic in timed conditions. The assignment is worth 20% of the overall grade.\u00a0 They will also have written examination that lasts 2 hours and 20 minutes and is worth the remaining 80% of their grade.<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>Higher level<\/strong>, pupils will research an assignment topic within class time and write an essay on that topic in timed conditions. This assignment is worth 33% of the overall grade. They will also have a written examination which is split into two parts. Paper 1 consists of writing two essays, one from the British and one from the USA topic, and Paper 2 which consists of answering four source questions.
