Scottish Education Awards – Port Ellen Primary

On Tuesday 12th June Staff and pupils from Port Ellen Primary attended a glittering ceremony at the Hilton hotel in Glasgow as finalists for the Scottish Education Awards in the learning through technology category. There were schools and representatives from all over the country present and the winners from three finalists in each category were announced by Jackie Bird.  The finalists had been chosen from over 650 nominations, so it was a great honour to have made it this far.

Earth Summit Essays

As part of Port Ellen Primary P6/7’s rainforest topic the children entered an international essay competition organised by the Living Rainforest for the Earth Summit in Rio this summer.  The children had to write a persuasive letter to the UN Secretary-General to persuade world leaders that the rainforest is worth protection and why they should promote sustainability to protect it.

Fourth Green Flag for Port Ellen Primary

Port Ellen is pleased to announce that we have managed to achieve our fourth green flag, awarded to us by Eco Schools Scotland.  Our Eco Committee have worked very hard all year, making posters and videos, cleaning the beach and school, doing the gardening and checking the pond and it is great to hear all the work has paid off.

Port Ellen Primary – Celebration of Science and Engineering

On Friday 8th June five children from P6/7 – Aileas, Dan, Elinor, Ewan and Jason – went to the Celebration of Science & Engineering at the Science Centre in Glasgow.  They were there to showcase the science and technology we have done in school and science club over the year; the Forces in Motion topic for National Science & Engineering Week; the wave power generator that we designed for the Saltire Award; and Jason’s individual pyropyramid.

Port Ellen Beach Clean

WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH
On Friday afternoon the whole school took part in a beach clean of our adopt a beach Leodamus Bay in Port Ellen. It was a lovely if windy afternoon, and the tide was very far out so we were able to access parts of the beach we do not normally manage, and gather a large quantity of rubbish. Apart from the usual suspects such as tyres and plastic string, we also cleared an old umbrella, boat rudder and half a canoe. Polly Mather, the Islay and Jura beach ranger, was there to help and provide the bags. In total we collected half a tonne of rubbish, earning the school a donation of £110 from REJIG. Port Ellen Animation…update

Primary 3&4 have been very busy this term learning all about polar lands for their topic.  They found out about the different creatures that live there, what the climate is like and how the weather affects the animals and people who live there.

Argyll National Galleries Competition Finalist

Liam Campbell in Primary 6 Port Ellen Primary reached the final of the National Galleries ‘Inspired? Get Writing’ competition and was awarded a special merit in Category A. He chose an abstract painting by Jackson Pollock and wrote a poem which personified an abstract idea of chaos. He went to Edinburgh to hear his poem read aloud in the National Gallery of Scotland.

Port Ellen Visit: WILDLIFE CENTRE AND MUSEUM

P1&2 have been finding out about dinosaurs and investigating different ways we can discover about the past, including books, the internet and museums. On Thursday Primary 1&2 went for a visit to Port Charlotte where we were met by Mr Reavey who took us to both the Islay Wildlife Centre and the Islay Museum so we could learn all about museums. Port Ellen’s Selfish Giant

P4/5 have just performaed their play named The Selfish Giant, which is adapted from a short story by Oscar Wilde. Firstly, we had to write the script so we all wrote a different part of the story. SWIM AND WALK FOR SPORT RELIEF

Today was Sport Relief and at Port Ellen we were very sporty, celebrating in style. It was great to see all the children wearing red to raise money for Sport Relief. In the morning the whole school went to the swimming pool to take part in our swimming gala. It was very exciting, with some close run inter-house races! In the end the winners of the relay were Orsay, who also won the house swimming cup. The winning team were Maisie, Emily, Angus and Daniel. OUR WORLD IN MOTION at Port Ellen

From the 12th March-16th March it is science and engineering week. Primary 4-7 are all taking part in a whole week of science and all the activities we do is about forces. The first thing that we learned was Newton’s 3 laws and they are very important because they describe forces very well. The first law is “when forces acting on an object they are balanced,it will remain at rest or move in an straight line at constant speed”. The 2nd law is “force=mass x acceleration”.
