Dunoon Primary present ‘Bells Ring Out’

All at St.John’s Church were delighted to have Dunoon Primary’s fantastic choir sing for them on Sunday 14th December at the evening service. The children were beautifully dressed in Nativity costumes and led the service with ‘Bells Ring Out’, a selection of songs and linking narrative. The confident, enthusiastic speakers told the Christmas Story to a packed audience of parishioners, parents and friends. Speech Contest Success for Dunoon Primary!

Dunoon Primary School pupils were presented with the winning star at the final of the Association of Speakers Club final at Dunoon Grammar School on Friday 5th December. Aidan was the proud winner with Lily joint runner up. The quality of all the speeches on the night was amazing as the pupils from various other local primary schools took part. The judges commented on all the children’s varied speech topics and that the pupils had worked so hard achieving high standards overall. Well done!

DPS Halloween Disco Fun!

Dunoon Primary had an exciting Halloween disco provided by their wonderful PTA last night. The hall was adorned with the pupils Halloween art work and decorations. The flashing lights set the scene for a fun filled night as the DJ Steven played a good selection of songs that the pupils had chosen themselves. The teachers were hard at work providing fun Halloween activites like feely boxes, apple dooking and doughnuts on a string.

Dunoon Primary Head Boy/Girl and new Clan Captains.

Dunoon Primary School were delighted to announce at our recent assembly that we have a new Head Boy – P7 Logan and a new Head Girl – P7 Emma. The hall was full of enthusiastic parents and pupils when it was announced by Mrs Sylvia Clark our Headteacher. The Pupil Council were all given colourful badges, well done for all their hard work in our school!

Really Small Scientists Win Prizes

Following the Nano-Science workshop in September, Primary 3 and 4 pupils from Dunoon Primary School produced posters about Nano-Jelly. During the workshop, run by the Really Small Science Group from Strathclyde University, the pupils became ‘Really Small Scientists’ for the day and learned about the world of Nano-Science. They discovered how everyday items such as jelly and even their own bodies are made up of tiny nano-sized molecules.

Dunoon Primary School Gardening Club – Harvest Update

In September, children in Dunoon Primary School’s Gardening Club harvested their first crop of potatoes. After throwing away the bad ones and cleaning the soil from the rest, the children piled the potatoes into the barrow and delivered them across the road to the local health food store, Eco Grain, to be sold. (They also kept a few behind for tasting and all agreed that they were very tasty!) Local shoppers had to be quick off the mark as already we’ve heard that the potatoes have sold out! We’ll need to start working on a bumper crop for next year …

Teacher locks P5 up in jail

P5s in Dunoon Primary School went to Inverary Jail on Wednesday as part of their Scotland topic. They got there by two mini buses. When they got to the jail the children got changed into prisoner’s outfits and went to the Court Room to listen to some cases. After the Court Room they went to the Airing Yard. The Airing Yard is where the prisoners did exercises like running and walking. Next they went to the Old Jail; it was sort of cold but it’s a lot different nowadays.

Scottish Parliament Visit

The Primary 6’s and 7’s from Dunoon Primary School along with the Primary 7’s from St Mun’s Primary School recently visited the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. This followed visits to our school from the Outreach Workers from the Scottish Parliament. The children have been learning about Democracy in Scotland through their Interdisciplinary Study. They are learning about the benefits of living in a democratic society and how we should value and respect the views of others who may differ from our own.

Stuart Reid visits Dunoon

The pupils of Dunoon Primary School were treated to a visit from children’s author, Stuart Reid. Stuart’s current Book Reading Tour has seen him reading to over 30,000 children across Scotland and England. Stuart’s uniquely entertaining readings are wild, wacky, and hilariously funny for everyone involved. Dunoon Primary Pupils do Really Small Science

Pupils from Dunoon Primary School discovered the world of nano-science with researchers from the University of Strathclyde. The ReallySmallScience group, led by Joy Leckie from the Chemical Engineering Department at Strathclyde, demonstrated nano-science to P3 and 4 classes using hands-on experiments. Skye’s Big Haircut!

Last Friday the pupils and staff of Dunoon Primary School came to school with crazy hairstyles for ‘Mad Hair Day’! The school was supporting Skye, a P6 pupil who recently had her lovely long hair cut off to donate to the charity the Little Princess Trust. The Trust provides real-hair wigs to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland that have sadly lost their own hair through cancer treatment.
Pupils who wanted to join in brought a donation for the charity and on the day the school managed to raise a total of £146.14!
Skye, who also fund raises for The Little Princess Trust has raised over £400 herself. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause, you can do so buy following the the following link to Skye’s Just Giving page. HERE

DPS Commonwealth Concert

Dunoon Primary hosted a spectacular Commonwealth Grand Concert on Tuesday 24th June. The Concert began with a parade of all the countries and the choir then sang ‘Heres to our Commonwealth’. P1 – P7 then followed with a selection of songs relating to their chosen Commonwealth Country.

Roots of Empathy at Dunoon Primary

This session, Primary 3 have been involved in an exciting new initiative called Roots of Empathy. Throughout the year there have been weekly visits from the instructor Ailsa Dominic, Early Years & Family Support Worker and every three weeks a visit from a mother and baby, Kym and Harris Byron.

Dunoon Primary P7s Leavers Dance

P7s at Dunoon Primary have been very busy in the last few weeks planning and organising their “Summer” themed Leavers Dance. Working in small committees the children took everything into consideration: invites, advertising, decorations, music, food and photography. Robert Miller Baton Bearer Visits Dunoon Primary!

Robert Miller, a 4th year pupil at Dunoon Grammar School recently visited Dunoon Primary School to talk about his recent nomination as Baton Bearer in the Queen’s Baton Relay. During his enthusiastic presentation he said he was surprised to hear he had been selected from so many community nominations as up to 4000 Baton Bearers from 34 local authorities will take part in the relay.

P7/6 WW2 Drama Production & 1940’s Street Party

As a finale to their pupil led World War 2 Interdisciplinary Study, the pupils of P7/6 warmly invited parents & family members to their World War 2 Drama Adaptation of Carrie’s War on 15th of May 2014.

As a thank you to family members for allowing pupils to bring in fantastic artefacts & interesting resources from home eg vintage ration books & genuine war medals, the class also invited family and friends to join them for a splendid Street Party after the production. P7 organise P1-3 “Fitness and Fun” Club at Dunoon Primary

As part of the whole school Commonwealth celebrations, Miss Johnston and P7 have been planning, organising and running a sports club for P1-3 pupils. Each week the younger children have had the opportunity to try out a different sport featuring at this year’s games, e.g. hockey, football, badminton, etc. Almost all P7 pupils have volunteered to help run the club showing themselves to be responsible and effective members of the school. They have also developed their coaching and mentoring skills.

Proud Kodu Competition Winner!

Aidan, a P6 pupil of Dunoon Primary School was delighted last week to hear that he had come joint first in a Kodu Competition for primary schools across Argyll & Bute. Using Kodu, Aidan designed an online game with the Commonwealth Games theme. He was thrilled to receive a prize of a Raspberry Pi donated by local businessman and entrepreneur Sam Coley of Samteq. Aidan now intends to submit his game into the national Scottish Kodu Competition.

Shared Learning Training

This week Dunoon Primary and the P6 pupils of St Muns Primary have been busy working together in a Shared Learning Initiative. This was led by 5 pupils from our Sal Team and assisted by Mr Gary Clark, Mrs Mary Peek, and Mr Steven Simpson (DGS Student). The pupils from St Muns were very enthusiastic and keen to learn all the new technology skills that were on offer.

Kidz Fit at DPS!!

Today Dunoon Primary was treated to a day with Kidz Fit! The gym hall was filled with smiling faces and the skilful instructor Carl put the pupils through their paces! Kidz Fit sessions educate children about how to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle, how the human body works, as well as the importance of giving one hundred percent and being the best we can be! The ultimate goal is to improve Every Child’s self esteem, physical and mental well-being, confidence, and motivation, all combining For A Better Future.
