‘Rabbie Burns Day at DPS’

On Friday 25th of January, P5 had a great Burns Supper. We had shortbread and Irn Bru. The entertainment of the day was the fiddle by Skye and Anna, Highland Dancing by Tina and Emma, Chanter by Lili, Leagha, Amie O, Poem by Graham – ‘To a Mouse’. The Class Danced the Virginia Reel. ‘Smileawi’ at DPS

Nigel and Victoria Milne were delighted to be invited along to Dunoon Primary School to talk to P4- P7 about their adventures in Malawi. They showed the children a slideshow and told them about the work that the Raven Trust does in Malawi. They told them about rural poverty and the difficulties facing the local people also telling them a little bit about the water projects and the wonderful work that they saw Mary’s Meals doing. Brownies and Guides at DPS

Peverley McChlery, Girlguiding Cowal District Commissioner attended morning assembly on 9th January 2013. She told the children a brief history of the Scout and Guide Movement. The fact they were both over 100 years old, and that Lord Robert Baden-Powell an army officer had originally decided in 1907 that boys and young men may enjoy an organisation where they could do many outdoor activities, like camping, tracking and learning how to live off the land. ‘One Bright Star’ Dunoon Primary School Choir

“All who attended St John’s church last Sunday evening enjoyed a pre-Christmas treat as Dunoon Primary School Choir led their annual carol service. Presenting the Christmas story in narrative and song, they performed the lovely cantata “One Bright Star” interspersed with some traditional carols.” Lots of smiling, happy faces from the children proved how much they have enjoyed singing the beautiful songs this year and they were pleased all their hard work had paid off. Dunoon Primary ‘A Christmas Recipe’

Dunoon Primary and the Nursery have been busy working on this years Infant Nativity entitled  ‘ A Christmas Recipe.’  Cat and Dog are helping Cook create a special Christmas recipe.  Into a huge bowl all kinds of ‘ingredients’ are added in turn.  Father Christmas is the first to be stirred in, followed by presents, robins, snow, a donkey, shepherds and angels, stars, wise men and one final ingredient – a Christmas gift that is all wrapped up in a manger.  The love that a special baby brings is the vital ingredient to complete the recipe. Christmas Fayre Dunoon Primary PTA

Dunoon Primary School held their annual PTA Christmas Fayre on 29th November 2012.  The hall was beautifully decorated with a huge tree and superb Christmas frieze of a traditional Christmas Scene!  There was lots of artistic art work created by Dunoon Primary pupils on display too!  The stalls in the hall varied from home made chocolates to jewellery. Speech Contest

On the evening of Friday 7th of December four pupils from Dunoon Primary took part in the final of the Speaker’s Club Competition in St John’s Church Hall, Dunoon. There were ten finalists in total representing local schools including Dunoon Primary, Kirn Primary, St Mun’s Primary and Strone Primary. Blair McColm of P7 in Dunoon Primary was first to deliver his speech on “The Truth about Rottweilers”.  Katie Cameron P6 of Dunoon Primary was next with her speech on “Dunoon Primary School Choir”.  Reece McIntyre P6 of Dunoon Primary was the 5th speaker of the evening with his speech on “Tigger”. Dunoon Primary School Choir

Dunoon Primary School Choir recently entertained the Members of the High Kirk Guild and Guests from the Befrienders Association at their annual Christmas Afternoon Tea.  The choir provided a varied programme of songs old and new with the hard work of their conductor Mrs Heather Hamlet, supporters Mrs Maureen Scott and Mrs Mary Peek ensuring that songs from this year’s Musical Christmas Tale ‘One Bright Star’ were performance perfect. Book Week Scotland at Dunoon Primary

To celebrate the first ever Book Week Scotland, Dunoon Primary School have been busy reading and writing. To launch Book Week Mrs Clark and Mrs Fisher held a whole school assembly where they read aloud their own piece of writing entitled ‘My Favourite Place’. This inspired the whole school to get writing about our own favourite places.

Scottish Country Dancing in Dunoon.

The Annual Dancing Festival for the Royal Scottish Country Dance Association took place today at the Queens Hall, Dunoon. The children from P4 and P5 have been practicing for several weeks and were keen to show off their newly acquired dancing skills. They looked absolutely great in their tartan sashes and rosettes.Their dancing skills were to be envied by all the parents and friends in the upper balcony of the Queens Hall. Children In Need 2012 at Dunoon Primary

Mrs Macdonald and Primary 6 of Dunoon Primary School organised activities to raise money for Children In Need.  The children sold raffle tickets to win a ‘Sporty Pudsey’ from Build A Bear, they organised an art competition to draw a Sporty Pudsey honouring the success of the Olympics.  On Friday 16th November everyone was asked to wear something Spotty or Sporty and to give a donation of 50p for Children In Need.  A Baking Sale was also organised for Friday morning to enable children to buy a weekend treat for themselves and their families. Arctic Odyssey 2012

Dunoon Primary School P4-P7 were given a treat today as Eilidh McNab from Dunoon Grammar School gave a talk on her 3 week Arctic Odyssey 2012 expedition in July this year.  She went to Northern Norway within the Arctic Circle and was based in Loppa Fire.  The children sat very quiet and listened intently to her as she told them how they lived during those weeks.  They had lots of questions at the end of her talk and all of them said they would love to go when they are older and do the same!   Continue reading Arctic Odyssey 2012

Burgh Hall Fun

Tuesday 30th October, saw Dunoon Primary P5 out once again using their investigative and learning skills.  The venue was the Burgh Hall and the event was the “Beach Forum”.  All children had to complete four varied activities.  They especially enjoyed all the hands on tasks.  They became archaelogists with the Kilmartin Group – finding many examples of what life was like through the ages. Dunoon Primary create 3D Artwork in Bishop’s Glen

Two P7 boys from Dunoon Primary visited Bishop’s Glen on the final day of October 2012.  They went to create artwork from natural materials gathered from the forest floor.  They enjoyed creating 3D sculptures.  While collecting their leaves, seeds, moss, twigs, stones and berries they discovered some felled trees and learned how to work out the age of a tree by counting the rings.  They were between 24 and 28 years old. Halloween fun at Dunoon Primary

The Annual PTA Halloween Party was held on Monday 29th October 2012 and was packed with children from P4-P7.  A fun filled evening was provided by the Parent Teacher Association.   The hall beautifully decorated was adorned with Halloween figures ranging from ghosts to vampires.   The disco for the evening was provided by Gareth Blair who provided the children with the top hits from the charts.  There was dooking for apples, string doughnuts and feely boxes filled with ghoulish delights.  The best boy dancer of the night was Drew P4 and the best girl dancer was Leagha P5. What a super night, a tremendous treat for our new Headteacher Mrs Sylvia Clark !  Well done to all involved for providing this superb night. Continue reading Halloween fun at Dunoon Primary

Dunoon Castle House Museum

Armed once again with clipboards and pencils, P5 Dunoon Primary School, set off to investigate the Castle House Museum.  They were looking for further evidence on how Cowal had changed over the decades. 

The museum (in the children’s words) was fantastic, amazing, exciting and spectacular!  The enjoyed watching a film, which showed various areas around Cowal, comparing Cowal in the past to the present. Some of the children preferred Cowal in the past!  A fabulous time was had by all and the children would recommend a visit to Castle House Museum for young and old. Pirate Day at Dunoon Primary

On Wednesday the 3rd of October Primary 2/3’s took part in a Pirate Day in their class and around the school.   They enjoyed a wonderful Pirate feast laid on by the kitchen staff as did the entire school.  Mrs Campbell’s walls are decked with pirate memorabillia as the children have carried out a variety of pirate activities throughout the day.  They created their own pirate names, played pirate games, made pirate hats and have been working on pirate puzzles, all as part of their class interdisiplinary topic this session.   Much fun was had by all!  aaarg me hearties!! P5 visit to the beautiful Castle Gardens

On Wednesday 26th September, Dunoon Primary P5 pupils (as part of their Interdisciplinary Topic ‘Our Local Area’) visited the Castle Gardens. 

The sun was shining brightly and each group, clipboards in hand investigated the various areas of the gardens to find out as much as they could about the history surrounding this central area of Dunoon.  They took rubbings of plaques,sketched any monuments found in the garden and completed worksheets.
