Dunoon Grammar School Badminton Winners

A number of our pupils took part in the Annual Argyll and Bute Schools badminton championships last week. Our pupils were a credit to Dunoon Grammar School. Their standard of play was exceptional and they returned with a number of titles.

Gymnastics courses coming soon………

The following courses have been organised for primary class teachers to assist with the teaching of gymnastics and dance. The courses will be led by Anne Murphy, Development Officer with Education Scotland.
– Wednesday 26th February 10am-3pm, Inveraray Primary, gymnastics and dance.
– Tuesday 4th March 3.45pm-5.45pm, Colgrain Primary, gymnastics.
– Wednesday 5th March 3.45pm-5.45pm, Sandbank Primary, gymnastics.
– Thursday 13th March 10am-3pm, Oban (venue TBC), gymnastics and dance.

3 new ipad training courses at Cardross in 2013

iPads for Beginners
Date: Wednesday 23rd October 3:45pm-5pm Location: Cardross Primary
Places: 30
This course is designed for teachers interested in using an iPad within the classroom but are unsure where to start.

Final images from our SLF visit.

Here are a few final images from our visit to the SLF this week and some feedback from a few guests. The Festival attracted around 4000 delegates this year with representatives from each local authority across Scotland as well as delegates from around the globe including Australia, Denmark, Norway and Finland to name but a few. Clyde comes to our SLF stand!

Day two at the SLF has been busier than ever with a very important guest taking part in our fabulous stand. The hard working pupils have once again been exceeding all expectations, meeting people and showing them our blog. The guests have been constantly surprised at our pupil’s confidence and knowledge. More unusual guests at our SLF stand!

Day one at the SLF went tremendously well with lots and lots of visitors to our stand including these two large animals! The pupils involved in day one worked very hard throughout the day engaging with visitors and demonstrating SAL to a huge number of people. The SAL team have welcomed lots of visitors so far to their stand including, Mike Russell MSP and a warrior from Bannockburn. Pupils had to resort to extreme tactics to engage with the warrior. Work Experience Opportunities: Over 16 and interested in a career in music?

imageJoin the Scottish Chamber Orchestra for a week to experience the life of an orchestra from the inside. You will have the opportunity to spend time with all the departments of the SCO administration and attend rehearsals and concerts where possible. The SCO offers two placements that each last one week. If you are successful, you will be based at the Scottish Chamber Orchestra offices in Edinburgh. Week 1 beginning 14 October 2013, Week 2 beginning 25 November 2013 Download the application form HERE and return by Friday 6 September.

‘Raising the Bar in Core Physical Education’

Early Years and Primary Practioners….. you are invited to ‘Raising the Bar In Core Physical Education in Argyll and Bute’ on Saturday 21st September in Inveraray Primary School, 9.30am for 10.00am till 3.30pm.
The day will include finding out about the ‘Significant Aspects of Core PE’ and practical workshops in Better Movers, Better Thinkers (BMT), Athletics, ‘ Let’s Move’, Athletics, PE in the Outdoors, ICT in PE.

Argyll and Bute, in partnership with Apple and XMA, invite you to a day with Keynote Guests and hands on workshops to explore the potential of this technology to transform learning. Topics include: Assessing with iPad – A hands on workshop exploring assessment. Creating Content with iPad – A hands on workshop looking at how to use content creation tools. Teaching with iPad – A hands on workshop focusing on how the iPad can transform learning and teaching.

Rothesay Post Card Event

Thank you to everyone who sent postcards for the World Record Postcard Event. These are being passed to Guiness for approval.
The Post Cards will be part of an art instillation at the Cabbie’s Rest in the last weekend of July.

Interplanetary Pioneer – Fergus Glen-Lee

Fergus Glen-Lee from Oban High School has been invited to join Fuselab at Edinburgh University to plan life for future civilizations in the event of an evacuation of Earth.
Fergus saw the avert on SAL for the opportunity for young Scots to join the team made up of business and academia from North West European Communities. Fergus had to demonstrate his creative and divergent thinking to get through the selection process and has been chosen to spend a week at Edinburgh University.

Rothesay Postcard Event

Pupils at St Andrews Primary, Rothesay are pictured holding just a few of the postcards received over a weekend in May from all over the world.
Well done to everyone who took part in the Postcard to Rothesay World Record Event. Over 400 postcards have been received from as far a field as Japan, Canada, Australia, Spain, Italy! More info about the record to follow.
The plan is to have all the postcards on display in the Cabbie’s Rest at Rothesay Pier in late July, actual date to be finalised.

The Argyll & Bute Assessment Forum

The Argyll & Bute Assessment Forum has been set up this term to help drive forward the assessment agenda in Argyll & Bute. It has a cross-sectoral membership and schools throughout Argyll & Bute are represented. The aim of the forum is to draw together assessment guidance to assist all schools and to seek out and share good practice. To help the forum achieve this, a very short survey has been designed to give all teachers the opportunity to share their views and good practice on assessment.
Many teachers have already responded but the forum would like to hear from as many teachers as possible. Please click HERE to take part in the survey. It will only take you a few minutes.

St Joseph’s lift the Challenge Cup!

Excitement ran high on Thursday 24 May when a number of local schools put forward a team to play for the local ‘Challenge Cup’ with the P6 & P7 boys of St. Joseph’s Primary School bringing home the trophy. The final game was a 2-1 win for the team with Robbie Livingston setting up the school to claim victory with the first of 2 goals. However, the winning goal came in the last few minutes of the game when Ben Malone placed the ball firmly in the back of the net.
