JsP_51. A bungee jumper completed two jumps.
On the first descent he fell 63 metres in 4•5 seconds.

During a second jump, the bungee jumper wore baggy clothing and spread his arms out as he fell.

 

 

a) Explain why the time was greater for the second descent?

b) The bungee jumper had a mass of 65 kg. Calculate his weight.

 

2. The diagram below shows a skydiver and the forces acting on her.

a) Name the two vertical forces acting on the skydiver.

b) Some time later these two forces become balanced.
When the forces are balanced, does her speed increase, stay the same or decrease?

c) The skydiver then opens her parachute.
(i) What happens to her speed at this moment?
(ii) What happens to the upward force acting on her?

6. The diagram shows the space shuttle returning to Earth. As it moves towards Earth, it moves faster.

a) Why does the space shuttle heat up as it re-enters the atmosphere?
b) How does NASA prevent the heating of the space shuttle from posing a hazard for the astronauts inside the shuttle and damaging the fabric of the spacecraft?
c) Find about who said “Houston, we’ve had a problem” and why he said it.
