Mass and Weight
Mass is measured in kilograms (kg). It is a measure of the amount of matter making up an object. The mass of an object does not change.
Weight is measured in Newtons (N). It is the force on an object exerted by gravity. Weight will change depending on the gravitational field strength,g.
e.g. On the earth’s surface g = 10 N/kg
On the moon g = 1.6 N/kg
The gravitational field strength is the force acting on each kilogram in a gravitational field.
The acceleration due to gravity near the earth’s surface is the same for all objects regardless of their mass (assuming air resistance is ignored):
