Class News

China and Chinese New Year

The boys in girls really enjoyed learning about China and how people celebrate Chinese New Year.  Everyone got the opportunity to take part in a dragon dance to round off our visit to China.  They had to think about how the dragon would move (up and down) and moving in time to the music.

France

Now that the class have finished learning about China we have moved onto France!  One of the things the  children were interested in learning about was French food and this fitted in nicely with pancake day.   Here are some pictures of the children enjoying eating some ‘French Crepes’ which they made.  We were then able to use this learning to write instructions on how to make crepes.

As well as all of this we have been learning about the French flag, the Eiffel Tower (something the children had highlighted an interest in) and we are beginning to learn some basic French greetings and how to count to 10.

Welcome Back!

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a brilliant Christmas and a Happy New Year! The children are all raring to go and have come back with lots of news about how good Santa was to them this year.

Thank you very much for the kind greetings and gifts at Christmas,  I very much look forward to buying something nice soon.  The flowers have done very well and are still looking great! 🙂

Topic

This term our topic is going  to be ‘World Explorers’ and we will be visiting some different countries.  We will be starting with China (linking this into Chinese New Year) and then we will move onto France where we will begin learning some basic French (counting, days of the week and basic greetings).

Show and Tell

To help introduce our topic the children are going to take part in a class show and tell around the theme of World Explorers.

Ideas for their show and tell may include: a photo of them on holiday, a train ticket, a drawing of them on a beach, a leaflet from a theme park (anything they have done that shows them exploring a different part of the world).  Your child will be given the opportunity to talk about their show and tell in front of the class and we will then put the item on display within the classroom.  If everyone can bring something in by Monday 22nd January this would be great.

I am very much looking forward to the new term! Thank you for your continued support throughout.

Winter Art

Penguin Pictures

The children did a fantastic job creating these Penguin Pictures.  First they drew winter snowflakes and swirls with white and grey crayons and then they added a wash (water and paint) to complete their background.  We then spoke about how we had used cold colours to create these images.

The children then drew penguins which had to include all the different features (head, body, beak etc…).   These were then cut out and stuck on and glitter and snowflakes were added for finishing touches!

Timetable Change

Library

You may have noticed that the children were issued a new library book on Tuesday, this is our new library day.

Please make sure that your child brings their library book to school on a weekly basis.  If you have lost a library book please bring in a replacement book and so they can continue to take books out with the rest of the class.

Thank you,

Miss Moyes

Winter and Cold Lands

Our class topic this term is, “Winter and Cold Lands”.  At the beginning of the term the children took part in small group discussions  and talked about what they already know about this theme and what they want to know/ find out.  Here are some of the questions they came up with:

Where do Penguins live?

Why does snow fall from the sky?

Where do polar bears live?

Why do the leaves fall off of the trees?

Who lives in igloos?

Why is snow white?

Why does snow go away?

Why do we get snow and ice?

As you can see they have come up with lots of great questions and we are now trying to answer as many of them as we can.

We have carried out science experiments to help develop our understanding of ice and what causes it to form/ melt.  During these experiments we spoke about solids and liquids, freezing and melt and high temperatures and low temperatures.

Frozen Man/Lady

In the experiment below the children had to free the duplo man/lady.  First they tried using different objects to break and melt the ice but they soon discovered this didn’t work so after some discussion they decided to try and use their hands.  They were able to conclude that this was more effective because their hands were warm and this melted the ice allowing them to free the duplo man/lady.  During and after the experiment we talked about how the ice had turned from a solid to a liquid.

Anti Bullying Week (W.B. 13.11.17)

This week we have been talking about kindness and being a good friend, during Circle Time we turned to a partner and said two kind things to them and then we reflected on how these made us feel.  We also talked about how unkind comments and actions can make us feel (we used a paper heart to illustrate this).  You may wish to discuss this with your child at home.

During assembly we listened to a song about the importance of not being a bully.  For homework please listen to and discuss the song and what it means in relation to our Golden Rules, “We are kind and helpful”.

Autumn Walk

In preparation for our writing this week we got to enjoy an autumn walk and we really enjoyed playing in the leaves.  The children then went on to draw and write about their experience.  Some of us wrote about building volcanoes with leaves, others wrote that they enjoyed rolling in the leave and everyone enjoyed throwing the leaves up in to the sky like fire works!

October Break

 Homework

The sounds in your little blue books this week are d and e, please hand this in on the first week back. Remember to revise sounds previously taught.

Please note –

There will be no reading books issued over the holidays.  All reading books should be returned to school by this Thursday (this will allow us to get ready for reading the following term).

Things to do in the holidays-

Here are some fun activities you may wish to do in the holidays to help your child to consolidate some of their learning from this term.

Number formation competition: How much fun can you have writing numbers correctly? Take a photo of your child doing this to send into class for judging and display. You could write them with icing, chalk, foam, paint, chocolate…  Try to use the number rhyme cards to support correct formation. Remember to use your imagination and have FUN! If you do not have a printer at home, you could send in an example your child’s number formation work instead.

Sounds Hunt: Look around the house/garden (or wherever you are!) to find things beginning with different letters.

Reading challenge: 1.  Can you find somewhere fun and interesting to read a story?  Take a picture to show the class after the holidays.  We can then display these in our reading corner.

2. Can you enjoy a bedtime story with mummy or daddy everyday?

Photo Gallery-Story time!

Story time with P7s

Here are some pictures of the boys and girls enjoying reading stories with Primary 7S (something we now do on a weekly basis).  We enjoy listening to the stories and talking to our partners about what we can see in the pictures.

Term 1 update

Phonics-

When completing your phonics homework please try to revise sounds previously taught (s, a, t, p, i, n, r, m, d, e).  If there are any particular sounds that your child is forgetting please try and focus and reinforce this one at home (use the Jollyphonics app to help you).

Name and Numbers

Your child will now have received a laminated card with their name on one side and numbers to ten on the other.  We are really trying to reinforce the correct formation for these, as well as neat writing.  Once your child is confident doing this on a laminated card try doing it on a blank piece of paper.

Extension Activity-

If your child is confident writing their first name (with correctt formation) they can move on to their surname.

Reading Homework

The children are really beginning to get into the routine of reading in a group and now have a little homework task to do relating to their book (see inside reading record).  These tasks are mostly discussion based and no writing is required.

Please remember to bring your reading book and reading record to school everyday, as there can occasionally be changes to the timetable.
